I think my husband (maybe soon to be ex-husband) may have purchased a timeshare without my knowledge. Is there any way to research and find out if he owns a timeshare in his name only? Or would this be like searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack??

If you know where it is, you can go to the online county records office, and search for it under his name.

If you know where it is, you can go to the online county records office, and search for it under his name.

But only if it is a deeded interest. If it is an RTU, trust points, a 'Club' membership, etc., it won't show up in the county recorder's office.

If he is really a soon-to-be-ex-husband, be grateful that he bought it in his name alone; he alone will get to pay the maintenance fees into perpetuity. Your only "interest" in the timeshare will be the right to recoup half of the purchase price from him.

I'm not offering any form or flavor of legal advice on this specific matter, but your statement may very well not be correct.

It is a directly relevant fact that the (currently) married OP reportedly lives in California, which is a community property state.

Anyone can search deeds (which are, after all, public records) by using grantor and / or grantee name(s). However, deeds are generally recorded in County records within a state, so it is obviously useful to first know the specific state and then the specific County in which to even initiate a search at all in the first place.

In some places (Vermont comes to mind as a specific example) deeds are actually recorded in individual towns, potentially complicating the deed search process.
