I sent an email to the owner of this one: $10 timeshare at Foxhunt - week #26 (July 4th)
Sapphire, N Carolina:
http://myrtlebeach.craigslist.org/for/996966089.html
I asked if the week trades in II or RCI. It makes a big difference.

Foxhunt is dual affiliated

I also contacted the owner of the Foxhunt week. He and his brother inherited it in the 80s when their father died. I don't think they ever traded it and barely used it. This week is really tempting but I think I'm going to pass, I hope I don't regret this decision.

Foxhunt is dual affiliated, FXH - Interval International and #3421 - RCI

According to another owner (and TUG moderator) FoxHunt receives an AC when deposited with Interval and is a good trader. I don't know how it trades with RCI.

So if you're a newbie looking for your first timeshare, this would probably be a good one.

Craigslist is pretty good stuff but you still have to be careful... check this link regarding a scam targeting timeshare listings. I am sure there are variations on this method also.
http://www.consumerfraudreporting.org/CraigsList_scams_timeshare.php

That scam has been around for years and has been much discussed on TUG, and frankly I can't imagine anyone with any business sense falling for it. Also - it doesn't have anything to do with getting a timeshare for free. Just because a timeshare is free, doesn't mean you can't use a reputable closing/escrow company to handle the transfer and make sure everything is legit.

I responded immediately and positively to one of those ads for a free timeshare, and never received a response. How legit are they?

I think with everything, some are legit, and some aren't. It's possible that the person found someone to take the TS rather quickly and didn't bother responding to others who later wrote them. If they weren't legit, they probably would have written back and said that they needed some sort of deposit to pay for the closing/transfer/resort fees involved in giving the TS to you.

Here is what I do:
I go to google, advanced search and put in free timeshare or something similar. I put craigslist.org in the domain to search.

We posted an apartment for rent on Kijiji last week (our family business manages a few small apartment buildings) -- we were inundated with calls and emails and actually signed the lease the next day. We didn't have time to get back to everybody who tried to contact us, especially the people who were asking questions where the answer was an absolute NO. eg. wanted to rent it without seeing it.

I think if it is a private person selling their timeshare, you're more likely to run into this. Like us, they don't need to make contacts for future business.

Thanks for the responses. I finally did hear from the seller today, so it was legit. Not a private person but someone who works out of the resort, they want to choose the closing company and want me to pay upfront.

I assume they are trying to get rid of deadbeat accounts.
