Anyone been in Oceanside on Labor Day who can give me a perspective on the Annual Pier Swim there? (As a competitive swimmer, if it were on the Atlantic Coast I would swim it, as I will be at Aquamarine Villas that whole week, but with 68 or 69 degree water, I am afraid I will have to pass.) It seems like it could either be a pretty festive event, or it could be one of those intense athletic things that is gone in a flash once the event is over. Do people make a day of it?

I don't know anything about the event, but I can tell you the ocean temperature is a relative thing. I was a lifeguard in college. We had our lifeguard tryouts in 52 degree water--- a decent temperature for a beer. And, that was enough to make about half the guys step in and quit on the spot.
Right now, the ocean temperatures are hovering in the mid 70's-- high. And, September is typically the highest.
Once you hit the water, you acclimate quickly-- even at 68 degrees. Total distance-- probably about 1000 meters. It looks fun... Go for it!

My brother in law does it every year.

I love being in the waves but the pier is a 1/4 mile long and you are way out there on the turn.

He never wears a wetsuit even in winter. He's just a crazy man.

The ocean temp is perfect right now. It's warmer than it has been the last few years.

Thanks, guys - the online surf sites are saying the water is 66-68 degrees. The event does look like a lot of fun.

I think it feels warmer than that but out at the end of the pier, it might be a little colder.

Go get em!
