Dear All,

If we flew into the Big Island for four days what would you recommend. We want to see the Volcano surely, but should we even stay at Kings Land during our stay on the Big Island. If we are travelling around the Big Island anyway, hitting different beaches and the volcano park what would you all recommend. About time we hit some other islands besides Oahu next year. Thanks for the suggestions.

I would visit the volcano park, and drive around the coastline - making a whole day of it, and stopping at the high points. It would be best if you can break it into 2 days with a stop in the middle - maybe an overnight at the volcano park?

Get a good travel guide to decide where to stop.

Here is a webpage with some suggestions: http://www.to-hawaii.com/big-island/scenicdrives/

We have done this and it was a long day, but we took a lunch and drinks in an ice chest and really enjoyed it.

When we went earlier this summer, we took a (very long) flight from the East Coast, and went directly to Volcano House--the lodge that's within the National Park, right on the rim of the crater. We stayed there for one night, had a nice dinner at the restaurant that first night. Since we were jetlagged, we got up super early the next morning, and were able to go up to the look-out to see the sun rise over the crater. It was a lot less crowded early in the morning, compared to late at night. Volcano House also has free bikes available to rent, so we biked around for a bit, then explored the park by car, and when we were done, drove back to the other side of the island to check in at Kings' Land. It was a really great way to do it.

We didn't have nearly enough time in one week to do everything we wanted to do on the island, so we have to go back. Our 4 favorite things were:

1) Lava Boat Cruise -- the lava's flowing into the ocean right now, and the best way to see it is from the water.
2) Zipline/ropes course. Super fun.
3) Snorkeling in Kealakekua Bay.
4) Stargazing at Mauna Kea. (Every night, you can go halfway up the mountain to have a guided tour of stars and planets--it's completely free, and they set up telescopes so that you can see the moon and planets).

Things we didn't get to do, that will be on our list next time:

1) Snorkeling at night with Manta Rays
2) Horseback riding into the Waipi'o Valley
3) Akaka Falls
4) Hike to the green sand beach at the south end of the island.

I found myself regularly going to this website when trying to find good vendors for some of the tours we selected. http://www.lovebigisland.com/activities-to-do/ It was a great resource.

Before I answer I would want to know a few things.

Is this the only island you are visiting during this trip? If no, which other island(s) and how long?

If you want to see the volcano, spend a couple of nights in Volcano Village, or at the Volcano Lodge inside the park (Volcano Village is only a few minutes outside the park).

The Big Island is big, and you'll spend a lot of time driving. If you are coming from another island, fly into Hilo, spend a couple of nights in the Volcano area. Then you could drive up to Kona, spend the last two nights there and fly out of the Kona airport. You could stay at Kingsland, but it would be a farther drive.

I'm assuming you're going to hit the Big Island after your HHV stay.

There are two airports on the Big Island. One in Kona and the other in Hilo. I agree with the others that it makes sense to fly into Hilo first to visit Volcano National Park then drive over to the other side for your Waikoloa Village stay flying out of Kona when you leave. Ideally it would be great to split the stay with two nights on each side but HGVC requires a three night booking during Club Season. Perhaps you can pick up two nights via Open Season since it only requires a two night minimum.

Here's a map wth distances - http://www.spotlighthawaii.com/spotlightPDF/WebMap/BigIsle/BigIsleGold-IsleOverview-web.pdf

NOTE: It will be cooler at the Volcano so pack layers - http://www.hawaiigaga.com/WeatherGuide.aspx#big

It's a very far drive from King's Land to Volcano National Park. You can do it, but it is a full day. Since your priority is seeing the volcano, I'd stay one night over there. You can stay at King's Land the other nights if you points you need to use, otherwise, it's a bit tucked away from literally everything and you can save some driving by not staying there.
