We booked a studio with full kitchen,w/d at this property. Its either in the older Virgin Grand section or Coral Vista. Is one preferable or to avoid. Any other recent tips are appreciated.
It should be in the VirginGrand section. This studio is larger than Coral Vista and has a full kitchen. Although they are not brand new like Coral Vista, they were updated a few years ago.
The big advantage to virgin grand is that it is across the street and up on the hillside. The big disadvantage to virgin grand is that it is across the street and up on the hillside.
We own villas on both sides and love them equally. Enjoy!
Sorry couldn't respond to your PM. I agree - both have advantages/disadvantages depending on the style of vacation you and family would like best.
Did you say you were renting? From who? That may give more info as to location.
If SPG points used - how were you assured that you would have a studio villa that is a Timeshare (VGV or CV) and not hotel room (which can only be reserved with SPG points)?

David, SPG.com lists rooms as either "Westin St. John Resort" or "Westin St. John Villas." When you go to select the rate, they give options that provide the square footage, the phase, and photos.
Which makes me wonder if the OPer didn't mean StarOptions instead of StarPoints. Because SP reservations indicate the phase.
