Unless you're on Southwest, Delta, American or any other airline that no longer has a rule 240. Also, note that these rules are precluded by weather, war or other events outside the airline’s control. But they’re all good for things like scheduling snafus, mechanical failure, and general incompetence.

American last year re-booked me on United when I got stuck in Dallas when I asked, still had to stay overnight as it was 830p in Dallas . I wrote American and got a voucher which made up for the overnight hotel/taxi hassle mostly anyway.

AA handled it nicely then. Their contract of carriage only states that they will get you on another AA flight.

Not the same thing. I am able to get buddy passes every so often. Always an adventure...I start very early in the day and bring a good book, put a change of clothes in my carryon and..................
try to get stuck in the Vegas airport overnight if possible.

Its getting to the point that every flight is an adventure, I guess its all in the way you look at it. Im retired so dont have to be home for work; that makes it alot less stressful in itself.

Some years ago my flight out of LAX was delayed considerably and the airline (which shall remain nameless) was unhelpful. We found options on other carriers and I insisted they act, and I (and a few other passengers) didn't leave the counter until our issues were addressed. The airline didn't want to do anything expect delay us ~10 hours while other nonstops on other carriers were available. In the end they did the right thing and put about 10 of us on the nonstop to our eventual destination. But, this wasn't a fun experience and I don't relish having to try to do anything similar today, given the complete incompetence of most airline checkin staff.
