Your MasterCard credit card can now be used to pay at the pump in the U.S. If prompted for a ZIP code at the pump, take the three numbers in your postal code, add two zeros to the end, and use that number. For example: If your postal code is A2B 3C4 take the 234, add 00 to
get 23400.

Works with both for us as well. So happy to find out about this because it was always such a hassle before.

We have also been doing this for a couple of years now, Visa, MC and Amex.

Didn't realize that people didn't know this ... we've been doing this for several years now. It's definitely not new, but obviously, not as well known as it should be!

Good to know! It is a pain to have to go into the service station to prepay and then go back in if we don't need the full amount.

FWIW, many of the urban stations near me are now automated and without on site staff. So, if you can't pay at the pump you can't pay at all. I had no idea Canadians had this issue when in the US, but it makes sense now that I've read this thread.

That's really helpful. We don't have a problem with pumps just across "the line" in Washington State but when we go to California it's a major pain, especially when you're gassing up the rental car and in a hurry t get back to the airport.

Thanks

We had similar problem in Canada. Some pumps would not take US credit cards.

I can't wait to share this information with my Canadian cousins who always complain about not being able to use their cc to gas up when they visit us in N.Y.

Thank you for sharing.

Chip and PIN security in Canada

We had similar problem in Canada. Some pumps would not take US credit cards.

You need a chip and PIN credit card to buy gas at automated pumps in Canada.
