Anyone have experience with car rental at the STT airport then taking a car ferry over to St. John? Where is the best place to rent and where does a car ferry leave from? Leaving KW 49 - can't wait!:)

Last year we rented at Avis at STT and took the ferry to St. John. Take a look at this link: http://www.vinow.com/general_usvi/interisland_ferry/ for the ferry schedule. You just have to get used to to driving on the 'wrong' side of the road. :)

I always rent in STT and take the ferry over. Have used both Budget and Avis--save yourself about $25 a day. I find the service counter personnel at Avis to be better and quicker. Normally I go to STJ twice a year and the rental car the easist way to go--get off the plane and your ready to go no waiting in the airport. Plus you get to shop in STT before you get on the ferry.

Driving on the left is easy in the islands.

I'll be there in 16 days. But who is counting.

For the past 6 years we have always traveled between STT and STJ via the Westin Ferry because of convenience and it is just nice to arrive right at the Westin dock. But it is just getting too expensive as our kids are getting older and having to pay the same as adults. This year will be the first year renting a car in STT, driving to Red Hook, (unless there is another port we can leave from???), and taking the car ferry. We should be able to get a decent car for a whole week and still pay less than the cost of the Westin Ferry.

To me it also depends on how often you plan to use the car. When we went, we only rented a car for two days - we were more than happy to spend most of the time at the resort.

In addition, the Westin ferry allows as many round trips as you want at no extra cost. We ended up spending a day in St Thomas. Leaving from the Westin dock made it pretty easy.

One other thing I haven't seen mentioned here is where to rent in St. John. We rented right at the resort but others have recommended renting in Cruz Bay. The big advantage (really big) is that when you go to Cruz Bay, you can park for free at the rental agency. Parking is such a hassle that we always took the cab (and they also charge per person. To me, if I wanted a car for most of the stay, I'd rent in Cruz Bay rather than in St Thomas. It is a bit more expensive but there are upsides to it to.

only Redhook has the car barge - make sure that they are running - recently one was down and the wait was hours (in the heat/humidity)

All options are good (with pros/cons) - depends on your needs and money spent - we spend almost no time at the resort - so a car is key. There is more parking in Cruz Bay and we have not had too much of a problem, but then again we are there in a lower season.

Certainly the people working at O'Connor at the Westin could have use an attitude check - they seem to take the island attitude to the extreme.

If we go next year - we are going to try and rent on STT.

Make sure you understand how to get to RH - they are essentially 2 ways - but be prepared for driving on the left w/ many more cars on the road and going faster than STJ

BTW, there's something no one else had mentioned. Yes, they drive on the "wrong" side of the road. But unlike Great Britain, they are all American cars with the steering wheel on the left! That does not make it a whole lot easier.

Not a major issue on St. John as the roads don't lend themselves to driving too fast.
