I'm still not real clear. Can someone help me?
If you buy Harborside or any other mandatory unit , can you trade this for a voluntary unit within the starwood system such as the one in Cancun?
Please clarify

Yes, you can. Voluntary resorts purchased from the developer also can trade. It is only if you buy a voluntary resort resale that you can't trade within the network until you requalify it with a subsequent developer purchase.

Have you had a chance to read this TUG Starwood Article? It's very helpful.

If you buy a unit from the developer at a voluntary resort, you can exchange for any resort in the SVN. (All weeks purchased from the developer are in the SVN.)

If you buy a resale unit at a mandatory resort, you have the same opportunity to exchange as someone who bought from the developer.

If you buy a resale at a voluntary resort - you can't exchange within the SVN at all.

or... [unless you are hooked on HS] if you can go during low season/weeks (and best units are a lower priority than $ for you) - consider resale VV (or WKV) Mandatory and exchange into HS or other SVN poperties.

Just make sure the SO grouping fits (we bought 81K at WKV for exchanging into a 1Bd Hawaii) for whatever you works for your SVN exchanging needs - resale SOs cannot be combined (but can be divided)
[unless someone chimes in differently...]

If you go SVN Mandatory resale - you have to consider Home Resort priviledges, value (investment cost) and annual MFs - and compare against your vacation needs within the SVN system -and matching with the SO chart.
...almost a science
good luck and good vacations
