Yes, it's possible to get a deposit back, and it's in the published rules, but I don't think it happens often.

I don't use II much, but a few years ago I deposited a week that I later decided to use. I just called II and the week came back to my SVN account. I remember it took a few days for the process to complete, but it was fairly painless.

So, I was doing 3 Request First exchanges with II. After setting them up in II, I called Starwood to assigned 3 of my weeks. The rep assured me that she made the "assignment" and not deposit my weeks.

A day later, I got a notice from II that I have 3 unredeemed deposits! I checked online II and indeed, I have 3 deposits and 3 echange request!

After spending a couple of hours with both Starwood and II reps, I learned that Starwood "assignments" show up as "deposits" in II BUT according to both reps, those "deposits" can be returned back to Starwood anytime if the exchange requests are not confirmed by II.

And yes, I did returned those 3 2015 "deposits" back to Starwood and "assigned" 3 2016 weeks instead.
