Woohoo! We saved ourselves an arm and a leg by buying resale. Just wanted to come back and share some of the info since all the comments and suggestions on here help us along the way.
We went with family to Honolulu in June and had a two 2-Bedroom units at the lagoon tower (one was at the corner so it had a huge living/dining room area). We never really paid any attention to timeshares until the sister bought retail (they are elite but paid I would say over $60K for it).
Anyways, we agreed to attend the sales presentation to get the 20K HHonors points and check out the new Grand Waikikian. Here is what they tried to sell us (all annual uses):
1) Grand Waikikian: 10,500 points gold for $59,900; 8,700 points gold for $46,200; 6,300 points for $43,990 (but they said 6,300 was sold-out)
2) Lagoon Tower: 8,400 points platinum for $55,490
3) Kings Land: 8,700 points gold for $45,990 or every other year 8,700 points for $29,894
They were throwing in 40,000 bonus points.
I said thanks but no thanks. My wife however almost pulled out the checkbook and since we had no background about resale we ended up purchasing the "VIP" offer which is their Vacation Introductory Program. Basically, for $1695, you get 7000 one-time points to try the club out. You can go to any Hawaiian, Las Vegas Strip, Florida Parc Soleil within 18 months and attend another presentation. Even though Grand Waikikian, Kings Land require more points, the VIP program allows you to stay there in a 2 bedroom for 1 week. The VIP program allows you to "freeze" the purchase price they offered you at the presentation and the $1695 would go towards you new retail purchase.
Well, to keep the damage minimal and the wife happy, I paid the $1695 for another week in Hawaii, which is not so bad.
Anyways, we got back did some research and bought 9,600 points platinum-2bedroom premier at Waikoloa for $16,000. Went with Judi K. for an easy breezy experience. :whoopie:
Now, we plan on going to Kings Land next year through our VIP program and can't wait to tell the sales guy that he will be wasting his time unless he can match what we paid retail
