Next week I go under the knife for a complicated umbilical hernia.

It was probably started from a laproscopic splenectomy operation in 1997 when they went through the belly button but it was dormant for years. 2-3 years ago I had some abdominal swelling from the belly button down that got bigger and bigger. All my docs said to just lose weight. But a CT scan showed the hernia was opening up. As I had no pain or other problems, the docs put me on a very restricted diet to improve the odds on the operation success.

Over 7 months I've lost 85 pounds while the abdomen continued to get bigger. So now it's gotta get fixed and I'll have both a hernia surgeon work on me, and a plastics doctor doing something like a tummy tuck for the stretched abdomen and lost weight. Stitches galore they warn me...and with 'old age' setting in...the recovery might take 6-8 weeks.

I didn't realize that hernia operations are so common, but I'm still apprehensive about it. We have a famous hernia hospital here in Toronto (Shouldice) but they won't take you if you're more than 15 lbs overweight. But they don't do plastics there and I didn't want two operations.

If you had or know someone that had this, perhaps you could give me some insight to what lies ahead?

Umbilical hernias

A few years back I had multiple umbilical hernias. Like you, I wasn't experiencing any pain. But all of a sudden, wham, it hit me. I had the worst stomach pains I've ever experienced. What had happened was the hernias had wrapped around my intestines and prevented me from digesting any food. Anything that went in would go back and forth trying to pass through until I had to throw it back up. I called my doc and he said he would admit me early but didnt have any openings so he would still operate the same day. This was scheduled about 4 days later so I opted to deal with the pain from home. Well 2 days later and I couldn't take it anymore and had a friend take me to the hospital, where my doc was waiting for me. All of a sudden there was an army of nurses surrounding me, squeezing IVs in by hand. WHen things settled down my doc (love him) told me that all my organs were shutting down and I was inches from death. OMG the pain was so intense and I didn't realize this was going on inside me for a few days, it was wild. I am not telling this to scare you but to let you know the minute you do start feeling any kind of pain to get it checked out. My recovery time was longer because I let it go too long. I was in the hospital on nothing but ice chips for 5 days, total stay was 8 days. Total recovery was approx 8 weeks until I felt lots better. Please have this taken care of sooner rather than later. It can be a routine operation. Good luck and take care

I had this done in November

Mine had strangulated,in the middle of the night, but the pain brought me right to my toes and a quick trip to the hospital. I was admitted, surgery the next day and I had to stay 4 days extra. Not fun. I did lots of throwing up, green bile, so was just pooped and exhausted. Still not surgeon free, I seem to have fluid collect in the surgical site, "tapped 2x in the office, 1st time got more than 500cc's drawn out and the next time 300. Have an appointment for this coming week but I can tell that they will tap it again as it is quite swollen. The pain is MUCH better, has been for about 6 weeks. Once in awhile I get a jab of pain but it is over quickly. I've got to wear a "belly band" around my stomach to keep surgical site tight. I hope that this will give you some insight as to what will happen, it's not too bad. You didn't mention if you were a gal or a guy, but if you've ever had a baby this is a piece of cake!
