I just confirmed an exchange of RCI. I am a weeks member and I used a partial points deposit (8 of 17) to trade into an Orlando timeshare that I have traded into twice before. In the past, the exchange was $199.

Today, it cost me $279.87!!! When I looked at the breakdown of the cost it was Exchange Fee--$209.00, Tax $79.87.

WTF???

First of all, in almost 20 years of RCI membership, I don't recall every paying "tax" on an exchange fee--no matter what that fee was. And secondly--who the hell charges 38% tax on anything???

I tried searching for any explanation of what the "tax" was for or how it was figured. There is no explanation. It's just added on at checkout.

Has anyone else experienced this--lately or at any time? If I call RCI to ask a question, will they charge me as they do for everything else?:wall:

In case you are wondering, the resort in Orlando is Bryan's Spanish Cove (#1613).

I have only seen tax added when doing an extra vacation not an exchange.

Using the resort code you provided, I started to book an exchange to read the extras that come up during the process. Perhaps this is what you are paying for "Resort Fees
Resort amenities fee is 8 U.S. dollars.
Resort Fee is per night (plus taxes). This fee covers the use of resort amenities."

There was another blurb about housekeeping fees for RCI points, but it looks like you didn't book with points.

I have never seen that before with an RCI exchange. I cannot imagine why Brian's Cove would have a tax like that. I would never pay an amenities fee to stay there, either.

I am glad I have multiple RCI accounts to take advantage of the Hilton 1-in-4 as much as I can. I have never paid an amenities fee of any kind at the Hilton. And it's the Hilton.

A glitch in RCI's system because of the updates? I see a lot of problems with the new updates. It's just going to take some getting used to.

Maybe they are just checking to see if you pay it without noticing/wondering, if it is a glitch, and they will just keep the mistaken $$ :ignore:

Resort amenities should be covered in the m/f of the person depositing the week, and should not be charged to an exchanger. Such resorts that charge this scam fee should be avoided like the plague, and in an overbuilt place like Orlando, exchangers should have lots of other options.

I would call RCI, it might be a glitch. Normally, the amenity fees are paid at the resort and not with the exchange fee. Please keep us posted.

I totally agree with Rick and Cindy. We have been to Brian's Spanish Cove a few times, and I cannot imagine what the "amenities fee" would cover, as they have so few amenities to offer. I would not pay the extra, even if meant cancelling the exchange.
