thinking of a week at Massunutten for next August to fill in the summer. We live 3 hours away, near DC. I am familiar with Mass. pools, waterparks, structured activities. But are there things for kids (10, 14) to do for free or very inexpensively? Are there good hiking trails? Lake to swim in? Creeks to walk around in and explore? Biking paths/trails that are not too difficult? Any place to roller blade-either sidewalks, paths, or an inline rink? Also, is it usually cooler in Aug. at Massnutten than in the rest of VA?

Does everyone have to buy activity card? Or can i get it just for the kids? Also, which are the best units location-wise to get? Are there any awful units? thanks, Elaine

Elaine, there is a great waterfall not too far from there and also there are 7 caverns in the area one of which is Luray and it is well worth seeing. This is the priceiest of them but all are lots of fun. Another good day trip is The Natural Bridge. shaggy

If you take the ski-lift up to the top there are hiking trails up there, and beautiful views. There are also trails near the fishing pond/play area. But nothing matches Shenandoah park trails.

My husband always gets an activity card, sometimes I do, sometimes I dont. If your kids want to do a lot of crafts, go to the shows, and you are planning to go to Luray, Frontier Culture Museum, Hall of Valor... the cards will help. You can get them just for the kids - but work out what you plan to do first. My grandkids like to go play solfball and soccer with the activities staff every chance they can. That was free :)

Ah...tons of stuff

I am an avid mountain biker. I love the trails at Mass. The western slope is great for even first timers with shuttle service to get to them if you want. From the overlook( we spend the whole week with our car up there) there is great biking for the intermediate and above. Email if you want specific recommendations. Also hiking from the overlook is great.

It is still HOT in Mass in August. It isn't that high to have much effect.......maybe a couple degrees.

The bottom line is the kids would love it. There is so much to do right there that you would never have to leave the resort. Saying that, the surrounding area is great too. JMU has many activities that kids would love.

You can also go kayaking in the Shenandoah River through the resort. Don't forget you are only about 30 min from the Skyline Drive which has great senic drives and great hiking. Monitcello is an easy day trip too.

We just came back from 4 days there. My 9yo and 3 yo LOVED it! My 3yo was crying and throwing a tantrum because she had to leave. We had a blast. The pools are all free and like others said above, there's trails, free activities, etc... I don't think anyone else mentioned fishing (license required) too...

In fact we had such a great time, we're going to purchase a TS there (our first).

A very interesting trip is to Green Bank, WV to see the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. It is free. Take highway 33 west to WV route 28 and turn south. There is a great science program before the bus ride out to the area with the dishes looking for what is in space. Maybe they will find ET while you are there.

Never buy retail. Only buy resale. Current market price for a peak season 4BD Summit or Woodstone seems to be around $2,000 including closing.
