Have you ever rented a Marriott timeshare booked thru Interval?

Has anyone rented out a timeshare they booked as a result of a deposit with Interval, using the "guest certificate" and paying the $49 transfer fee?

My husband and I deposited our Marriott week with Interval last year for a trade because we couldn't get into our home resort the week we needed. Our week with Interval was going to expire so we ended up booking a Marriott in Hawaii and now we can't go the week we're booked. I don't want to rebook the week because we don't want to have to then also renew our membership with Interval (it just so happens our membership expires about 2 weeks after the week were supposed to use it).

Some people have mentioned if someone rents from us, they'll have problems with checking in. But I don't see why/how that would happen if we pay the fee to issue the guest certificate and actually have the renters name in the certificate.

Am I wrong to think it should work?

If you are not able to go and the unit will be empty, why not just give the week away? Either way you'd end up with nothing, so what is the difference other than $49.?

It Worked For Me

About three years ago, I saw a post on TUG offering to rent a week at Marriott's Timber Lodge for $500. I thought that was a great bargain and I purchased it from the TUGGER, using Paypal. The TUGGER (who I will not identify, to protect the not so innocent, but very nice person) obtained a guest certificate from II and emailed it to me.

After I made the purchase, I read on TUG that this type of transaction might lead to problems. So I was really nervous when I drove up to Tahoe. But when I checked in Marriott treated me really well - giving me a great room and free parking. I had a wonderful week.

I later learned that the TUGGER probably purchased the week for $299 as a Getaway. No problem, she made a profit and I got a bargain. And I learned to watch II for Getaways (I'm going to Tahoe in October for $299).

If you get caught renting an exchange, you can lose your Acct., the deposit, the exchange, and any fees paid. If you quietly rent it to a friend you will probably be OK - if you advertise it and rent to a stranger, you have much more chance of being caught.

I appreciate everyone's input. I didn't realize it was against II rules; we've not had much success working with II in the past. So it was for those very reasons I wanted to post the question.

Thanks!
