We are going to be in NYC on 29 May and have never been before. I looked online and it seems like it would be cheaper to book a car instead of taking a taxi. I was looking at Dial 7, which is $39 (Not including tips and tolls) versus taking a taxi which was around $65. Anyone had any experience? Thanks!

I recommend Carmel Limo Service - http://www.carmellimo.com/

LGA To Manhattan - $30
Manhattan to LGA - $34

Be sure to Print out the Coupon (link is on home page) for $4 Off Airport Pick Up and $3 Off Return Trip. Don't forget to ask for the Coupon Code Number when you make the reservation.

You call Carmel when you pick up your luggage and they'll tell you the pick up location and the Driver's name.

I've used them several times. Much more comfortable then a taxi.

I asked this question on TUG a few months ago. Based on recommendations we used Carmel Limo Service from LGA into the city & from the city to JFK. We were very pleased. The service was prompt & the drivers were very professional. I would definitely use them for a return trip to NYC.

Carmel is good as recommendations above. Saves a few dollars over a Cab but add a dozen dollars for the bridge or tunnel. Plus tip.

BlueVan is cheaper still if there is 1 or 2 of you.

Train is really cheap from JFK. Airtrain to A (downtown) or E (midtown)

Bus is an option from LGA (M60 to the city then the 456, 123 or ABCD at 125th) but advanced money savers only.

Thank you all for your advice! I think I would not want to try and take a bus because I have never been there plus the luggage issue. :)

While in the city get a metro pass & use the goggle maps app. The valet at the Manhattan club showed this to us and it made traveling in Manhattan a breeze.

Planning a trip to Manhattan midtown at the Hilton Club. Airfare is a little cheaper into EWR. How to cab fares compare LGA-Midtown vs EWR-Midtown?
Thanks

From EWR, take the train to Penn Station...then it is easy subway or bus to wherever you want to go in Manhattan. Very easy, as the train is at the airport. I'm thinking it's about $15 to go into the city, but it's been several years since I've done this. There is also a shuttle bus service for about that amount that I did from midtown Manhattan to EWR.

From EWR to Manhattan is approximately additional $20 in tolls versus JFK/LGA to Manhattan so it is at least $20 more.

Thanks for the information, we are looking at doing an extended weekend trip in mid October - fall break. Any recommendations on places to stay for 3 or 4 nights? Two adults and one teenager.

I'm staying at the Hotel Edison located at 228 west 47th St.
Good rates and close to everything midtown. The top 5 floors are considered the signature series which have been recently upgraded. Also staying a few nights at the Millenium Hilton on Church St. Across the street from WTC Memorial. Little pricey but great views of the freedom tower/wtc and the fireworks at the Brooklyn Bridge on July 4th. Also has an inside pool.

If you fly into JFK you can take the Long Island railroad or an express subway directly into town rather than getting stuck in traffic crossing bridges. There is a subway stop about a block away from W. 57th and it is a fast and cheap way travel to downtown sights such as NYU and the 911 museum or uptown to places like Columbia. If my memory serves me correctly the subway is about $2.50 a trip. You can buy a metro ticket right at the airport.

From LGA, the best bet, IMO, is the Q70 LTD to Roosevelt Ave. and then the subway in from there. Very easy, although the wait for Q70 can be a tad long. No traffic on the subways, though :)

And, only $2.50 person, including free transfer :)

Cheers.

You really think this is better when you're hauling luggage?

Depends upon how much luggage. We have a rolloboard and personal item each, and do this all the time. There is a luggage rack on the bus as it is specific to airport travel. And we just stand or sit with it on the subway. If one has more luggage than that, though, it may not be ideal.

Cheers.

I am happy to report that I tried the AirTrain/E-train from JFK-Midtown and was super pleased :)! $7.75 one way, no traffic, took a little over an hour to get to the Manhattan Club in May. I used the subway on the way back as well and it worked perfectly except for some train delays and the express switched to a local, but I allowed enough time so that I was not late. I had one rolling bag, a backpack, and my purse. I had to carry my bag down the subway stairs, which was good exercise . I think this was a great option for me traveling solo with no one to share a cab/car fare with. With tip and tolls, our usual JFK-midtown ride is $70.

If I had more luggage, I would not have done it, though!

This is really good advise. I take public transportation to LGA and JFK numerous times a year and its a breeze with no luggage or just a small carryon. Taking public with 50" luggages and/or multiple bags is tough.

+1 on Carmel Car service, just make sure to print the coupon and bring it with you because the won't give the discount otherwise.

Just used Carmel car service this past week while in NYC. LGA to The Millennium Hilton [financial district] was $30. Two people, 3 large bags and 2 small. Took the BQE so there were no tolls. Door to door 20 minutes. No way on the bus or subway for this trip.

I agree that the AirTran and the E subway is a good & fast combo if you don't have much luggage.

Uber is quite good and better priced than many limo services in my view.
