I have bought plastic cases, and I have bought material cases.

Sad to say, but the airlines have damaged them both.

That being said, I think maybe the non-plastic cases would work if the clubs fit in snugly---as long as NO metal pieces on the golf bag are pushing into the material carrier.
I am going to try to apply tape over buckles, etc for my next trip; to see if me and the airlines can get the carrier there undamaged this next time.

My husband and I both have Bag Boy Hybrid cases. They are hard cases and then when you unzip the top off, it also serves as the bag cart. So in other words, it replaces our regular bags. So you would have to transfer your clubs and accessories from your regular golf bag over to these. We don't use the attachable pockets on the outside of the bag. We pack another small bag of accessories in our luggage. I think they were about $140 or so. They will last a long time and over the long run will really save us money compared to renting clubs. As long as we play more than once on our trip, the checked bag fees are less than the rental prices.

Before you buy one though, make sure it's long enough for his driver.

Best material travel bag is The Club Glove....get either the Burst Proof or Last Bag model. Last Bag XL is a monster; only needed if you have a tour size bag.
