Delta May Significantly Lower Fares on Transatlantic Flights - by Anne Stych/ Travel & Tourism/ L.A. Biz/ bizjournals.com

Delta Air Lines is considering offering inexpensive fares on transatlantic flights to compete with ultra low-cost carriers, a company executive said in an earnings conference call last week.

Competition from foreign low-cost carriers was cited as one reason the airline’s revenue from transatlantic flights has been down, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Delta (NYSE: DAL) is among several airlines that have claimed Norwegian Air Shuttle is competing unfairly by flying to the United States from Ireland to take advantage of labor laws. Norway-based Norwegian Air Shuttle is one of Europe’s biggest low-cost carriers.

The airlines have petitioned the U.S. Department of Transportation to stop the Norwegian Air Shuttle flights, but the DOT says it has f ound no evidence of labor law violations...."

Interesting. We flew Delta to Ireland in May, out of JFK. Our flight was so empty that almost every seat in the middle section was empty. I wondered why it was so empty, especially since the fare hardly dropped in the six months that I was watching it. It dropped once - which is when we purchased - but it was still expensive ($690 IIRC). As we got closer to departure, it went up again. I guess that ours wasn't the only flight that went across the Atlantic half full.

Nice to see that competition has an effect. It sure doesn't help our upcoming flights from the West. SLC-Amsterdam is full every day and close to $1500RT!
