Delta Air Lines is considering offering inexpensive fares on transatlantic flights to compete with ultra low-cost carriers, a company executive said in an earnings conference call last week.
Competition from foreign low-cost carriers was cited as one reason the airline’s revenue from transatlantic flights has been down, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Delta (NYSE: DAL) is among several airlines that have claimed Norwegian Air Shuttle is competing unfairly by flying to the United States from Ireland to take advantage of labor laws. Norway-based Norwegian Air Shuttle is one of Europe’s biggest low-cost carriers.
The airlines have petitioned the U.S. Department of Transportation to stop the Norwegian Air Shuttle flights, but the DOT says it has f ound no evidence of labor law violations...."
