Can anyone recommend a good vacuum?

The last vacuum I have is probably twenty years old. I need a vacuum that has particularly good attachments so that I can suck all the dirt/bugs from windowsills and vacuum the pet hair off the couch. I'm thinking that I would want one that uses bags since I wouldn't want to touch all the disgusting bug junk when emptying it into the garbage.

Lightweight would be good too, so I can get it up and down the stairs easily.

Suggestions anyone?

I bought a Dyson Animal (purple, i think #15) in February -- it sucks and I love it.
It has no bags, (i find that to be a plus, less ongoing expense) so when i empty the cannister, i just open it straight into one of those plastic grocery bags and it all goes right into that, no touch, no mess.
Attachments are great for pet hair, nice l;ittle attachement for the stairs, long cord so not necessary to plug/unplug more than once a level . IF you can call vacuuming 'fun' (yeh i know) -- this sort of is.
The only drawback that i find is it's a little difficult for me at times to get it up and down stairs. I sometimes take the cannister off to make it less awkward.
However , you could always ask 'Moose ' for help

Dyson Animal. A lot of vacuums are great when you first get them home. The Dyson Animal is still great two years later. (This is supposed to be the advantage of its design. It has been born out in our experience.)

Canister

I like my Red Velvet Miele canister vac though it's pretty heavy with the carpet attachment and not so easy on stairs. It has some great features and lots of suction.

Hi Sharon--

Do you have carpeting, hard wood, or both? I have no carpeting in my house (only area rugs) so I use a cannister instead of an upright. I have a Kenmore Progressive from Sears, it's at least 10 years old and still works great. In fact, when I first hired my cleaning lady, she asked what kind I have and she was thrilled. She owns the same one and actually brings it with her to clients' homes if they don't have one. I should add we've always been a multiple pet household (1 dog, 1 cat and a guinea pig at the moment) and the Progressive does great on the hair. I won't say it's exactly light, but it's not too bad to lug up and down the stairs. It's got all the basic attachments on board.

Thanks for the advice.

We have both hardwood and carpeting...some wall-to-wall (basement) and some area rugs that would require special care.

We have a cleaning service that brings their own vacuum (a canister) but they don't do things like suck the junk off the windowsills in between the windows (we live in the woods and get lots of bugs/webs in there), and the pet hair on the upholstery needs more frequent vacuuming as well.

I totally love my Oreck vacuum. It has a microfilter bag system, 8 lbs for the upright, and comes with a small 5 lb portable, which also has a bag.

Can you install a whole house vacuum system. This is the second house we have one and they are great. Note, make sure you add plenty of outlets and purchase the longer hose. There are several brands on the market. Check them out. Check the power. They are not cheap, but we feel they are worth it.

I bought an Oreck after getting tired of my sister sounding like a TV commercial raving about it. After hearing ME rave about mine - my mother also went out and bought one. I love it!! and better yet - so does my husband!! He hated dragging around my old one, now he doesnt mind vacuuming.

Dyson

I also have the Dyson 15 - but the yellow one - than I went and bought all the attachments that came with the animal (purple one). I've had it for about a year, and love it. No bags to buy, no filters to buy. My previous one, Eureka, I had to buy a hepa filter & 2 other filters - costing an extra $30.00 every 6 months. :wall:

On the Dyson the filter is washable, and you just press a button & empty the dirt in a plastic bag. Plus it cleans much better. :whoopie: I'm a happy camper!

Another vote for Dyson. I don't think I have the animal though...it's teal. I have 2 cats, one who sheds quite a bit and the Dyson is great. It's also great on hardwood floors...much better than my old Eureka.

Even though the (not so) old Eureka is supposed to be used upstairs, I like the Dyson so much, I'd rather lug it upstairs! It's relatively light.

I think I'll ask Santa for a 2nd one as the new design for using the hose attachment is supposed to be much better than the old one...then the old Dyson will be used upstairs and the other old one will get donated to Goodwill :rofl:

Costco has them. I think I saved about $100 on mine through Costco.
