I have 3400 HGVC points and I am told that 38,500 RCI points is way better. Equivalent to 3 weeks at an HGVC resort. I think this is wrong? I cannot find any information about how many RCI points is enough for 3 weeks at any resort... I know it depends on the season, but can you stay 3 weeks at an HGVC resort for that?

I'm not really looking, but having used RCI Points for many years and lots of exchanges, I'd say that it would be extremely unlikely to find any 3 weeks at any HGVC resort for 13,000 per week. Maybe a 'mud week' at a ski resort, but I couldn't name one. 38,500 per week would be (imo) a bargain at the majority of HGVC exchanges.

Jim

ETA: OK, I looked. There are 2 weeks at HGVC Waikoloa (Big Island) in Oct/Nov 2016. One is 44,500 RCI Points and the other is 50,500. Both are 1 BR.

My RCI Points PRIME weeks for a 1/1 at 43,500 RCI Points. And that is for a 1950s era building.... not a HGVC exchange.

3 weeks in a Studio during Silver weeks at HGVC sea world is only 3300 Pts (HGVC points) (weeks 44 – 50).

Who told you that? 3400 Hilton points is what it takes for a one bedroom anywhere in RCI at any season, no matter how high the demand. 38,500 RCI points is generally for an off season resort for one week.

uh oh

Ok, it looks like this is a really bad deal. That is what I thought when I looked around at RCI. So 38.500 RCI points is really only about equal to my 3400 HGVC points, if that? Not what I was told!!

I don't think it's even equal, but I could be wrong.

You need to cancel the deal. You can read here for a while and get to understand how to get best use of your Hilton and what RCI points are like. You may or may not still think RCI points is a good idea for later on. For me, it wasn't. I had a week that was worth 46,500 RCI points and was never able to find anything that I'd want to trade to for that small of points. Everything I wanted was much higher in RCI points.

Hopefully you were not in Vegas (Nevada) and were talked into buying a resale points package. In Nevada their is not recission period when purchasing a resale week (unless it is directly from the developer).

need an attorney i guess

I would love to cancel the deal. I wrote and told them I thought I was cheated, but they ignored me. I am outside the 7 day free cancel period, so I guess I have to contact an attorney in Arizona. The problem is that since I just got scammed, finding an attorney online is scary.
And by the way, they originally told me 38,500 RCI points was 5 weeks vacation. They told me that when I was there. When I tried to cancel the contract, they said it was 3 weeks vacation, 12000 per week.

Which timeshare did you buy? This makes me so mad. It seems to never change. There are unscrupulous salespeople everywhere. 12,000 RCI points is not enough for almost any decent week. I'm sorry this happened to you though. Your story just gives timesharing another black eye.

Yes, I hate that this happened too. I loved Hilton, although I found booking a pain. I should have just stayed with them. I got fooled into thinking I was getting a good deal. 5 weeks to use while I was still healthy enough. Now I don't even have the good Hilton week I traded. I can't say yet who this is until I find out the legal aspects. If I cannot get out of this, I will definitely let everyone know who to avoid!!

Booking is incredibly easy once you learn to start at nine months and not last minute. Transaction fees are the bane of HGVC and they go up every year it seems. Changes and cancellations are very generous too, if you dont mind losing the transaction fees.

Have you talked to the seller since you found out this was a bad deal? I would go through them first and hit small claims court as a second choice. Unless you paid a lot of money, an attorney won't be worth it. Did you just trade in your HGVC contract for the RCI points or did you give your HGVC and pay additional for the RCI point contract?

This is such an unusual type of sale, that I think we are missing a lot of information.

Legal Action

It sounds like it could be a Deceptive Trade Practices Act. Find a plaintiff's lawyer who handles those. AVVO.com can sometimes be a good way to find lawyers for a specific purpose like that.

RCI has last minute point sales for 7500 RCI points per week so that is where they came up with 38500 RCI points gives you five weeks vacation.

To find out what resorts you can get for 7500 points go onto RCI.com

Click on Search for a Vacation
Click on Exchange Vacations
In the left hand column go down to Points Range (7 nts) and click on that
1-10000 Points will come up and click on that to find what is available for 7500 points

My hunch not too many fancy resorts will come up but unfortunately you technically were not lied to because you can get 5 weeks of vacation for your 38500 points :(

I did contact the seller, and they were remarkably unhelpful. Hard to reach, didn't return calls, etc. Wouldn't explain or talk about transaction. I disputed the purchase with Discover (love those people- they are holding the transaction until resolved).
I just got a letter back from timeshare saying they will release claim to my Hilton timeshare but want to complete the rest of the transaction. I don't want to pay that much money for that few points with people I detest and can't trust or work with. ($7700/studio/38500 pts biennial). But it appears I may be stuck or sell back for half price - and I am already out attorney fees.
I hired someone to negotiate with them for me. I will let you all know how this turns out. I hate all this. No wonder people run from timeshares.

If this is someone that approached you with an offer to get you out of this, it is not likely to turn out well - I have never heard of a rescue company that was Legit.

I don't think you really need an attorney or a negotaiter - they will just want more money. Please don't put more money towards this, yet. You can file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, be sure to state fraud and give a very lengthy, detailed description, include all dates you tried to contact them, etc. They will have at least 30 days to answer the complaint. It sounds like this was a retail purchase - they will most likely answer the complaint through the BBB and resolve with exactly what you are asking for. If you don't get exactly what you ask for, file a claim with small claims. Small claims can only get you $5K back, but I doubt the company will want to go court for this.

It's good that you contact Discover and they are holding payment until you resolve the issue. I know this type of stuff is very upsetting, but hang in there and don't pay out more money to anyone. You can probably fix this yourself. It will take time.

Just so you all know, DTPA claims allow for attorneys fees to be paid by defendant. So with a reputable attorney, you likely wouldn't be out any money if they are successful on your behalf at a trial.
