I received a phone call on my ATT cell phone identified as coming from my own phone number. It was a computer generated message telling me my ATT account was flagged and asked me to imput the last 4 digits of my SSN to remove the flag. I put in 4 random numbers and it came back and said they weren't correct and that I should try again. I again put in 4 (different) random numbers and the message came back that the flag was lifted from my account. I called ATT and of course they said they had nothing to do with it.

I would not respond to that type of message at all, you can down load a virus to your phone. It's best to just delete it.

That happened to me once, too. I didn't answer it, so I don't know what I wanted to talk to myself about.

Seems legit to me. I would have put in the 4 SSN #'s and bank info. :hysterical:

Glad you didn't. Unfortunately, they don't need a high success rate to bilk hundreds or thousands of $$$$.

My wife said that happened last night on our home phone, yes we still have one of those. I will have to ask if the recording asked for any info.

It's too easy to spoof phone numbers now. I've been spoofed so many times in so many ways. I complained to the FCC and they said they can't do anything about it, but that my complaint may help change laws in the future.

Not necessarily...

Smart move with the random numbers

Not necessarily. Responding at all essentially at least verified the validity and functionality of the phone number itself.
Identity theft is all about putting pieces of an identity together --- one puzzle piece at a time.

If unanswered calls are directed to Voice Mail, wouldn't that also verify the validity and functionality of the number?

How may of you don't have your unanswered calls directed to Voice Mail.

Automated calls

I hate those computer/automated calls. At least with a human scammer/telemarketer I can get the point across, or at least entertain myself, by talking about random off-topic subjects .....weather, sports, foot fungus (did anyone know that the bacteria that makes Limberger cheese is naturally found in the armpits and between the toes ["food" for thought]).....the topics only get worse from there. Computers just don't have the ability to get pi$$ed off that you're not playing their game when they call or annoy YOU.
