I heard they are expecting 50 mph wind too with peak gusts up to 75 mph. That makes it worse than just having snow fall straight down.

Well, this is certainly different from any other storms we've ever had. Anybody have any ideas??

The town Fire Dept posted this on Facebook ten minutes ago (and the Police Dept confirmed it immediately): "We've received dozens of calls for an outside odor of natural gas this evening. This odor is town-wide and has also been reported in other local communities. National Grid has been notified and they're working to determine the cause. We do not perceive this outside odor as a threat to public safety at this time. We recommend keeping your windows and doors closed until the outside odor has dissipated. If you smell natural gas INSIDE of your home or business, please do not hesitate to call for further investigation."

They're now saying that an offshore tanker had to release gas "for a non-emergency reason" and the odor is affecting communities all the way from Plymouth up to Quincy. That's a large area! I'm inland a bit, didn't smell it here when I took the dog out, but friends on the other side of town say it's very strong there. It must be a combination of the storm's low ceiling keeping the cloud from dissipating and the offshore wind blowing it inland.

Bad case of indigestion on the part of the tanker! Get them some relief! :ignore:

Happy that I woke up this morning and I still have electricity! Can't tell how much snow is out there (we are in SE Mass) because a lot of drifts. Some spots I can see grass....others it is about 3 feet high.

Another 24 hours to go........

I think I'm going to clean out my closets!

Meteorologists are apologizing. Their faces are drawn and despondent, and their voices are barely audible.

I watched CNN Weather Report and also Weather Channel last night (from our cozy warm den in Georgia), and the "on-the-scene" vehicles had very little to report. One reporter said "look over there at that lone abandoned vehicle-----maybe it had a dead battery because there's no snow to speak of..." Funny, but I honestly believe they want catastrophes to report, and are disappointed when it doesn't happen.

Glad all my northern friends are NOT suffering, though. I'm not sorry the "historic blizzard" didn't materialize as predicted, especially the massive power outages, so congratulations!!! You can now officially walk on the sidewalks, per NYC Mayor De Blasio's ban. And Boston, you got off very easy this time, and I'm grateful.

Marty, I'm looking at at least a foot of snow with 3-4 foot drifts in places (three of them blocking my doors!) and another foot predicted before midnight. It's wild out there, very cold and very windy with some thunder and lightning. I don't think we got off easy. If you think so you can come on up here and grab a shovel. :p

New York City and some other places were spared but Boston-north is still getting hit. Don't be too hard on the meteorologists - they can only be as predictable as Mother Nature who we all know likes to play us for fools. :)

It's all relative. This map is interesting, showing an approximation of the amount of snow required to close local schools across the country:

MW-DE228_school_20150127102802_NS.png

I've lived in a dark blue area (24"+) all my life; nothing under 12" bothers me much. In fact, the city has never plowed the street where I currently live (10 years) -- we just have to live with it and deal with driving through tracks. The major streets are plowed, but that's it -- it is assumed people can handle driving on and through snow around here.

I'm wondering how accurate that map is because it's not close for me. I live in
The one foot zone and schools here have been closed for a few inches.

Susan, some were punished more than others......;)

but seriously, I'm not condemning all the meteorologists, just a bit dumbfounded at their reactions last night in and around the NYC scene. That was the only one I saw----didn't see Boston (MY BELOVED new favorite city, as you know). The NYC reporters were searching for things to say, and were basically chit-chatting on the street corner, talking about other things completely. I finally changed the channel. Snow wasn't even falling at the time.

We were in Times Sq a couple of years ago when it snowed far worse, and it was like a fairy-land....just beautiful. Last night was just a dusting, compared that is, to what was predicted. But all said, best to be over-ready and too prepared than not.

Sorry you got so much----hope you took some great pics....I remember your nice back yard of 2 years ago (I think) when you posted a photo of the snow-covered scene.

As for grabbing a shovel, I wouldn't know what a snow shovel looked like----I've never seen one and don't wish to. I've never seen a snow plow either, except on TV.

Are you sure all that stuff is real? TV people can play tricks on us, you know.

Oh my aching back! I've been out for a couple hours and got most-welcomed help from my neighbors, one with his snowblower, another with his plow AND his two young daughters with their shovels. It's still snowing, still piling up, but at least both front doors are accessible and the driveway is partially cleared.

The two back doors into the house are going to have stay blocked for the time being. The dawg is okay going through the garage to use that door but I don't think I'll be able to use the deck until May!

Marty, here's a winter wonderland for you. Hope to get more tomorrow after the snow stops, the sun comes out, and the dog and I can go walking. :)

THANKS for the pics.....I always love seeing stuff like that!!!
and your house looks as though it would be warm and cozy and loving on the inside. Great share!!!! Always wanting to see more of Tuggers' experiences in pictures.

When my good buddy "jont" gets home to Jersey from a conference in a nearby coastal town, he'll probably shoot me some more----he always does and it's fantastic. All neighborhoods look beautiful when covered in snow ....

We don't get snow in Augusta that much, maybe once a year, and only 1-4 inches max. Bring it on! We get to shut down and enjoy at the sign of the first flake.

anyway, Susan, thanks for that.

(Don't mind me, just reacting to the latest forecast of ANOTHER F-^&*%&%-N STORM that's going to be here Saturday all the way through Tuesday. They're not even telling us how many inches this time - probably they know we're all only <> <-- that much shy of losing our minds.)

`For once I timed something right.

Was "hunkered down" in Key West for the two storms, however, returned yesterday to the same snow, piled deep and high. Fortunately, my plow guy and shoveling neighborhood kids cleared the way.

When we left Boston on Friday, 1/23, there was just talk about "some snow".
By Sunday, 1/25, in Key West, "some snow" had turned into a monster of a blizzard.

I'm getting too old for this.

About a month ago, before all the storms when life was dandy, friends invited me down to Florida mid-February. Flights then were $700-$800 which I thought was too high for a reasonable person to pay. They haven't come down, have gone up to $850-$950, but at this point they could charge me $3000 and I'd consider it to be a perfectly logical price to pay.

I may just run away from all this next week, if Logan ever re-opens after Tuesday.

We took the Amtrak Silver service from Bos-Mia, R/T and then drove to/from Key West. A long trip, but we like doing this. Yes, it takes 31 hours one-way on Amtrak, but we talk, read, watch the scenery, rest, play Scrabble............. real party folks !

Yes, Amtrak does cancel service due to inclement weather, but they tend to resume service a bit faster IMHO.

I'm with you - ready to scream. Driving to work yesterday was horrendous and it wasn't even a real storm. We have nowhere left to shovel any more snow!

twenty years ago when dw and I married I suggested moving south to florida where my parents lived. My dw informed me she could never leave Vermont where all her family was and she grew up. This may be the winter she finally admits I was right!

First time ever we used our travel insurance-bought through Allianz. We usually get it when traveling internationally to supplement medical insurance and evac.

We were returning from Thailand via Hong Kong. Landed at JFK Monday night during the snow. Our connection was canceled Monday night. Rescheduled for Wednesday. Cathay Pacific put us up one night. (That was very nice considering weather related issues are usually NEVER covered.)

We decided to rent a car on Tuesday and drive to MD vs stain another night. Just submitted receipts for :car, gas, tolls, food Claim immediately approved. Our benefit was $200/day each for 8 days. Total loss was $362.00-all recovered.

As soon as I can get to the flagpole I'm running a white flag up it.

Boston just announced that schools are closed Monday and Tuesday. Do you know how unusual that is, to have school cancellations announced more than a day ahead?! It's freakin unusual, take my word for it. This is New England, where we know snow and we have the temperament and the equipment to deal with it. When it's normal. This isn't normal. This is a ridiculous number of storms with ridiculous snowfall totals all coming ridiculously on the heels of each other. I don't think I've had this much action with a snow shovel since I was a little kid and the only way Mom and Dad would let us out of the house during a storm was if we were shoveling.

AAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!! I just want to cry. And possibly kill my husband when he gets home next in May, which I'm sure will be well-understood by the jury of my peers because they're living through this freakin nightmare right along with me. ;)

Oh, and I have changed the title of this thread.

Susan ... I hear Hawaii calling to you. Go get the nice credit card and leave town. And then plead insanity when he gets the bills. That is, if he can find you.

And see a shrink to get that excuse for work before you leave town --- you are disabled and your husband can't abandoned a disabled spouse.
