Hi all,

Happy Holidays! New owner here, and I have a question about adding points vs. buying multiple properties. Is it possible to "upgrade" one's existing property/season/size to obtain more points rather than purchasing additional properties? I would imagine MFs increase far more quickly when owning multiple properties.

If so, must this be done through the developer?

We own a couple of HGVC weeks at different properties and have been offered to upgrade and consolidate into a single property in Hawaii with the developer at a cost to us of tens of thousands of $$. Platinum points resale (non-developer) are going now for record lows and passing right of first refusal HGVC normally excercises so it would likely be less expensive to buy on the resale market and either sell the smaller week, or simply have two maintenance fee's. Yes you will be paying out more in MF's but you'll still be ahead instead of handing over more $$ to the developer for many many years ahead.

HGVC would be happy to "upgrade" you... like a car salesman.
They'll pay a modest sum for your current TS (better perhaps, given what they'll charge for a "new" TS) and then charge you full-freight (retail) for the new unit. It's what they try to get folks to do at these "owner updates." Even if you "make out okay" on the trade in, the cost of the new HGVC-sold unit will eclipse the cost of multiple MF's for like for 15 years or so.

You could save yourself a bundle of $$ by selling your TS on e-bay and buying a higher-point unit off e-bay. However, if you can afford to pay two MF's, there's nothing wrong with carrying two units on your books. There are many folks here who carry far more than that. It only adds to your travel-opportunities.

When I upgraded, I got full original purchase price from Hilton on the upgrade. iI don't know if anyone else has the same experience. However, the minimum the do an upgrade for now is $7500.

I too experienced an offer of the original full price for a unit I purchased resale. But, the cost for the "consolidation" was be around $8K out of pocket. So, yeah, save on Maint Fee's over owning two units but the break even would have been like 15 years... Not that great so we passed...
