Dear fellow TUGgers..

Can somebody take me through the process as to how a trade of DC points through II may work? I have never done this before and understand that being able to "trade" is one of the luxuries of having TS.......

Let's use this example. Somebody has 3500 Marriott DC points and is interested in a non-Marriott property elsewhere which exchanges through II. For the sake of the example we can choose the Harborside Resort at Atlantis [HRA] (Starwood Property) or Hyatt Grand Aspen [HYA].

What would be the steps be, timeline for confirmation or denial, chances for trade and point conversion be? Use any dates you wish. I am guessing its tough to trade to most places and one of my big worries is that the longer you need to wait for confirmation the more costly it gets airfare wise, etc.

I am learning here and any feedback would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi, there is a table in the II brochure that tells you how many points you need depending on which season you want. Check the seasons in the usual way by loking at the chart at the beginning of the relevant chapter in the II brochure. Then you place your request or deposit as you wish. I am sure others here will give more details but we did this for the first time this year and have ended up with a booking to Malta which i am happy about. II staff were very friendly. The only thing i did find was when just looking before putting in the request was that the website was very temperamental at telling me what was available and the answer was usually next to nothing. Eg i had wanted a week in the UK but there were only weeks in december in not very exciting places.

This forum's Points FAQ has II-related info on the third page including a chart that verifies the amounts of DC Points required for exchanges, and a link to the 2013 II Buyers' Guide for Marriott Members/Owners.

I'm sure other TUGgers who have used this Points exchange option will chime in here to share their experiences.

Barry, those are the latest editions of both guides as near as I can tell and are both newer than what was in the FAQ - I updated it before posting here. The only change I see is that the Points Chart for 7-day exchanges that's included in the 2013 MVC Guide and copied in the FAQ is noted as being through 4/18/17 (updated from 5/8/16.)

No one has reported any experience with using DC Points to trade via II -- if you start experimenting with it, please report back to us with your success rate.

You may find that you are better off doing a trade with another TUGger -- someone who owns Starwood and can get HRA for you versus trying to book through II.

I know Puck did a trade with another TUGger to visit HRA, and I've done trades for HGVC properties a few times. It may also be easiest to rent your points for cash -- and then go rent what you are looking for.

Good luck and I hope it works out!

Best,

Greg

For pure Trust Members it's the only way to exchange through II into non-Marriott resorts, and at least one Exchange Member has tried it:
[2012] Got a DC points exchange into a non-Marriott

Hopefully folks with more-recent experience are reading and will join in. :)

For some of us trading with DC pts in II makes a lot of sense. The point chart for II trades means that if you trade for a small or low demand week you will not use many points. Since I get my points by turning in a 2 bd week (non lock-off) at NCV ( getting 2800 pts) I now can often get 2 trades from my pts instead of one trade. I also have the option of ignoring the pt requirements by using the week at NCV to trade for weeks in II that would have cost more than the pts II/the DC give me for my week.

I could say this a slightly different way and say
- I can trade-up in II the traditional way by using my week at NCV to trade for a better week somewhere else
OR I can make multiple trades using DC pts in II so I never have to trade down.

Win - Win
