Is it better to deposit your points into Hilton or RCI? I'm thinking Hilton because of the much higher fee you have to pay to make an RCI reservation but I want to make sure I'm not missing something before I deposit. I was going to donate the points but they did away with that program and $69 to rescue 400 points isn't too bad of a deal.

If you are sure that you will use the hotel points for a hotel stay, I'd go with that. 400 RCI points won't go very far and they will expire in 2 years. If you are planning on using RCI to trade in the next 2 years, sure it would be a good choice to deposit there. If you aren't totally sure, you run the risk of wasting your points and your money.

I think your best option is to let it go. $69 to convert 400 HGVC points * 20 = 8000 HH points * .005 = $40 value. Unless you are planning on maximizing your HH points later in life with a trip to some crazy Hilton resort thats $900 a night for 50k points.

I wasn't thinking anything along the lines of a hotel stay. 400 points will get you 3 nights in a studio vs paying open season rates, or I could borrow points from 2014 to get a longer stay or a larger unit. Can I not do that?

It depends on what you might do with it......

If could use in HGVC, then paying the fee might be OK, if you know you can you the points. Pro: Have 400 points moved use years, Have lower reservation fees (49 vs RCI fees 199) Cons: 69 fee to only move 400 points may be questionable if there is little use for the points in 2013.

If you deposit it into RCI, then I there is NO fee to deposit it, but you won't get much for it and you would have to combine it with other points to likely trade into anything. Pro:Better than let it go to waste period Con: Higher fees to book an exchange in RCI than in HGVC.

Use it to book a hotel stay and either keep the booking and use it, or cancel it and have the points go back into Hilton honors points. Pro: Points continue with no fees Cons: Now in Hilton Honors NOT in timeshare side of things.

400 points will only get you 3 nights in silver season, otherwise you don't have enough for a 3 day stay, but that would cost you $69 to make the club season reservation on top of the $69 to rescue the points. Relatively few places have a bronze season, so that would limit that use. Or, it would get you an additional 2 nights in gold season if you already had a reservation you could add on to. You cannot use points for a 2 day stay, it is cash only.

I would like more information before commenting. Are your 400 HGVC points in 2012 or 2013? Do you have Elite or Elite Plus status? Do you have an HHonors AmEx? How many points do you have in 2013 and 2014?

I have deposited points into RCI on several occasions because it gives me two years to play with them. RCI redemptions are among the most cost effective uses for HGVC points available. For example, you can stay in a 2 bedroom suite during red season for only 4800 points. HGVC trades very well in RCI. If your 400 points are in 2012, you may convert them to HHonors if you have Elite Plus status or higher. If you do not have Elite Plus status or higher and your 400 points are in 2012, that move would not be allowed. If your 400 points are in 2013, and you do not have Elite Plus status, you may convert them to HHonors before January 01, 2013. You may also move them to 2014.

The thread-title says "Rescue Option" - so I assume, we're talking 2012 points.

Folk, it's a fairly simple proposition. For 2012 points:

-- A rescue to HGVC can be used for Club or RCI stays next year (2013).

-- A rescue to RCI can be used for RCI stays for 2 more years (2013+2014).
... They call banking current-year points with RCI a "Deposit."

If you think they'll be used by 12/31/13, rescue them to HGVC (use for either).
If you're spending all of 2013 on the space station, rescue them to RCI.

IMHO, the rescue fee is worth it, as the points could make a difference.

if it is classified as rescue points now in 2012, it must be rescued prior to 2012. If you have leftover 2012 points in 2012, you want to rescue it, in 2013, they will be listed as rescue points in 2013. You can use them in 2013. You do not need to rescue point for 2013 until end of 2013.

I had some 2011 rescue points early 2012 after I already made my reservation used 2012 points. The club conselor helped me to change my reservation for 2012 to make sure that I use the rescue points first.

I try to make as few assumptions as possible as a matter of habit. That being clarified, I agree with your advice. I became confused with the talk about converting the 400 points to HHonors since same year conversions are currently only allowed for Elite Plus or higher. I usually avoid converting HGVC points to HHonors as the conversion rate is poor in my opinion.

I have an EOY, even years. No elite status and I'm not interested in HH points.

It would seem that you have 400 points left over in 2012 and your next points become effective 2014. If you rescue your 2012 points in to 2013, you would need to borrow some of your 2014 points into 2013 to do anything meaningful in 2013. I would then suggest depositing your 2012 points into RCI ASAP. Then you can use them for a nice RCI exchange in 2014. The deadline for depositing 2012 points into RCI is approaching.

If I have a small amount of extra points late in the year, I use them for an RCI exchange. The fee to rescue points is not worth it and RCI lets you use the points over a longer period of time.

Indeed. This point-stretching technique is not advertised by HGVC.
I've used-up current year points by booking an RCi stay for next year.

If you later cancel, the expired points can still be deposited back to RCI.
