Hey all does anyone know the best route of trasportation To HGVC waikola resorts. Is it better to taxi, shuttle, or rent a car??? If you rent a car from the airport are there any places nearby the HGVC for drop off instead of the airport?? If you do rent a car like some people are telling us to do, is there any places/deals that you would recommend?? All help would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thanks!

If you plan on staying within the resort the whole time you can get away with no car, there is a shuttle that goes around the resort every 30 min.

If you plan to visit anywhere off resort a rental car is best. We always get a car at the Kona airport.

Ditto.

The best car rental rates I've found have either been through Costco or discounthawaii. And once you've reserved, keep checking back as the rates change all the time.

The airport is a few miles north of the town and the resort is ~20 miles north of there. IMHO renting a car is the only way to go.

I've always used Hotwire but both the sites ( Costco & discount hawaii) were much better than Hotwire for the Maui rental we have for mid Dec. We saved about $100 ($260 vs $360)

With Hotwire aren't you committed once you select the rental, kind of like Priceline? With the way the rates change I wouldn't lock into something I couldn't change or cancel.

I have reserved through Hotwire several times, and the reservations have been cancellable.

We've used HawaiiJeeps.com in the past.

Great rates and they include a second driver for no additional charge.

Usually the rate comes back $100 or so lower than if you would have booked the same reservation.

I used http://www.carrentalhawaii.com when I stayed at Waikoloa. Another one already mentioned is http://discounthawaiicarrental.com. On the big island, you really need a car rental. Parking is free everywhere. I recommend getting gas at Costco if you have a membership. In 2011, I got a full size for 2 weeks for well under $500 with Alamo. And, I ended up with a Sante Fe instead which was even better. One strange thing that happened is that I discovered the tire pressure was really low and the warning light came on. I split my stay at Kingsland and Bay Club.
