1) Where do you want your home resort to be?
Doesn't matter.

2) Do you want to visit your home resort at least half the time, or do you want to trade more than half the time?
Want to trade most all of the time.

3) What are your 5 top trade destinations?
Europe; Caribbean, Las Vegas, New Orleans.

4) How many people do you usually travel with?
2-4

5) Can you travel any time, or are you locked into the school schedule?
Can travel anytime currently sometimes even with short notice. In the not too distance future will be able to travel whenever.

6) Can you make firm plans 12 or more mos. in advance?
Absolutely.

7) Can you vacation for a full week at a time?
Yes or even more.

8) What level of accommodations do you prefer on a scale of 1 to 5 stars?
Flexible depending on location.

9) How much can you afford to spend upfront, without financing?
Not really an issue, but we are cost conscious. Willing to pay if the program meets our needs.

10) How much can you afford to spend every year for a maintenance fee that will come due right after Christmas, and increase each year?
Again not an issue so much as cost/value ratio. I find that I can usually find acceptable accommodations where we are going on average at $100/night.

11) Are you a detail oriented planner?
Extremely detailed oriented.

12) Do you understand that once you buy a timeshare, it may be very difficult to sell or give away, and you are responsible for all fees, until you do?
I do.

We are soon to be retired but even now have the ability to travel about six weeks a year. We rarely go for two weeks in a row but often go for a week.

In addition to the above (with explanation below), the following things are important to us.

1. Flexibility, flexibility, flexibility
2. Ability to split weeks into smaller chunks, 3 nights, 4 nights (this is really more the way we travel).
3. Transfer ability to hotel program (perhaps to achieve the above).
a. cost per night of transfer ratio
ex. Wyndham timeshare points 126,000 if 1:1 ratio to hotel
One Night at wyndham hotel prop = 15,000 pts = 8.4
nights
$721 MF = 85.83 per night or .0057 per pt.
Depending on the Wyndham hotel property their
hotel points can be valued at as much as .032/pt

Two years ago I purchased a Wyndham week at the Avenue Plaza in NOLA resale. I knew (thanks to TUGS) exactly what I was getting. It is an uncoverted week so there are no points attached, no RCI membership, pretty much nothing but the week. We use the week to go to French Quarter Festival.

We went to the owners meeting and they offered us 126,000 points for our week if we bought 77,000 for 14k. I had not done my research on TUGS and did not purchase. But the presentation did get us thinking about a points system.

I currently manage our membership in, let's just say, quite a few travel reward programs. Excel is my friend. We are thinking that purchased points may make an excellent addition to our travel portfolio. I have purchased hotel points (not timeshare) in the past and have managed to get value from those purchases. I don't mind going the extra mile or making plans around a good deal.

Any ideas on what might be a good fit for us?

There aren't a ton of timeshare options in Europe. The Caribbean and Vegas are both easy to get as "extra vacations" or "getaways" or whatever. And you already own in NOLA. If I were you I'd just get an RCI membership with your current ownership and then just never deposit it. Use the membership to get access to extra vacations in places you want and just pay for those when you want them. It might not be the absolute lowest cost option but if not it's close to it. This option would be the least risky as well.

Your comments about Wyndham and converting Wyndham points to hotel stays ... that is a developer "right" not available to resale Wyndham buyers.

As for staying were MFs are $100 per night? The Wyndham points system will "add" layers of fees on top of your Avenue Plaza fixed week. And conversion to points will force you to buy a minimum number of full price points from the developer. If you decide to spend that type of money, buy ANOTHER week to convert for MAXIMUM number of points and also look at the PIC program ... get 2 more weeks at NON-Wyndham resorts into Wyndham points (hunt for 3bdr RCI weeks).

And are F/W there really with MFs UNDER $700 per week for a 1/1 Avenue Plaza unit... or is that a STUDIO unit?

Linda.

If they offered the op,126000 points to convert, an Avenue Plaza week, it is either a studio deeded in what the points system calls "prime" season, or a one bedroom deeded in "high" season The mf for a studio is $560 and a one bedroom $721...

And AgSweep

I dont know whether the Wyndham points system will be a good fit for you, but if you decide it is, dont pay Wyndham to convert your Avenue Plaza week, especially if you use it every year. And if you decide you would have the points than the week, you would do better giving the week back to Wyndham through their ovation program, and just buying some points on the secondary market

We would ALL love to travel anywhere, anytime, long stays (all winter anyone), short stays on short notice, in Europe and all the usual suspects, with 2 bedroom accommodations in luxury resorts, and by the way the budget is $100 a day.

Let us know when you find this. You'll have company.
