Resort Warnings--Reef at Playacar

I am new to TUG so I hope this is the place to ask;

I would like suggestions as to how to warn people about the Reef at PlayaCar. I feel embarrassed to say that I was taken by Tiffany, a very friendly mom of two sweet looking kids that was working at the Reef as a timeshare (accommodation contract) sales person. They would take our existing timeshares and pay us for them within 180 days. As you can guess, that didn’t happen. The resale company (RMS) told us that the buyer needed an extra 90 days. As you can guess that didn’t happen. The 2 bedroom turned into a 1 bedroom, and 2 weeks became 1 week, but somehow we didn’t see that on the contract. I don’t know how I could have been such a trusting fool. Everything that we were told was a lie and yet the Reef says that it isn’t their problem. Does the Mexican government care that resorts are doing a con game?
I did put a comment on Trip advisor a few days ago, but I would like other suggestions. Thanks.

Unfortunately we get many posts on TUG about questionable sales practices in Mexico. You can contact the Mexican consumer protection agency, Profeco, here to report fraudulent practices. There is additional information on this Mexico forum in the sticky posts at the top of the page that shows currents posts to this forum.

If it is any condolence, you have been had by the best of the best scammers.

Having done around a dozen pitches in CABO over last 6 years I have heard all of them. But that $300 cash and $30 breakfast with a couple mimosas is too tempting to resist.

Read what has happened with others here and come up with a game plan that best fits your situation.

Unfortunately what isn't in written contract is big strike against you!

I'm guessing that you are no longer within the five business days during which you can rescind? If not, then Profeco as suggested above is one way to go. They are slow, but they do get results in some cases.

Also contact the resort's management, owner department, anybody other than sales, and complain. Document everything you can remember - names, places, dates, promises. Keep every email, write down the name and extension of everyone you talk to.

If you ARE within the five business days, then go through your contract to find the instructions to rescind, and follow them exactly. Whether they say fax, certified mail, whatever, do it and do it ASAP. If you placed a deposit or down payment on your credit card, you could also dispute it there.

Please post back; we love to hear updates, which are sometimes happy.

PS - you might edit the title of your thread so that we know WHICH resort you are warning about. Click Edit, then Go Advanced, then you can change the title.

when did you purchase at the reef? We did basically the same thing in early March. The reef looked like it would fit us better than the big resort we bought several years ago. The sale was to take place within 180 days. They gave the couple (does cummings ring abell to you/ they were to buy our TS) an extension of 90 days.... no thought to us. They said the extension is uncommon.... yeah

looks like we own 2 ts now. I was readig in my contract... it the contract was beeched we had 15 days to dispute it or something like that. Well with fighting the extension and all it is well over that.more like the 90 days now.

was RMS going to rent diamond weeks for you too?

Go to the main page for the Mexico forum by clicking here. The posts at the top of the list have the word "sticky" in red before each one. That means they are "stuck" there at the top of the forum list and won't sink to the bottom as all the regular threads do when there are no longer any current posts to them.

The sticky posts contain information that we've decided was useful enough to have it remain on the top of the list. There are a number of different topics covered in all the threads and the one I was referring to in this thread is the one that starts with "Know Your Rights of Rescission . . ."

I have been a little busy with Christmas, so sorry for the late reply. I bought March 16th and believed totally Tiffany and her husband. She even has pictures of (her?) kids in the emails she sent me. Yes, they would rent my week if i wasn't going to use it, and RMS charged me an extra $39 to rent 2013. That reminds me to get in touch with Visa and get all payments to them stopped. The RMS info now says that they my rent not they will rent. In Canada we could complain to the police but I can't see that doing any good in Mexico.
