Question re airfare credit for cancelled trip

I would ask this on Flyertalk but they're not that patient, sometimes, with basic questions like this.

If I book airfare for my daughter and boyfriend now for a trip in January and then have to cancel it, can that credit be applied to tickets for my husband and I? Or would they have to be applied to daughter and boyfriend?

Also, this would be on Alaska. Would the credit be a year from the date of the booking, the date of the cancellation or the date of the flight?

Right now there are some amazing deals from Bellingham WA to Palm Springs for next spring, AS is competing big time with Allegiant. I'd like to book now but it's a long time in advance.

Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure the credit will only be issued in the name of the passengers; that said I've booked tickets on JetBlue and then e-mailed them when the fare has dropped and the entire credit was issued back to my FF account, so some airlines may issue the entire credit to the purchaser or at least one of the passengers.

fare credit will only be given back to the original passengers. the credit will be good for 1 yr from the date of booking, not the date of travel. Also, the airline charge $150 change fee per ticket. I am in the process of changing my flight with UAL now. UAL also charges me a $25 service fee per passenger (not per reservation) in addition to the $150 change fee for a total of $175; you also need to pay for any fare difference. For our flight from chicago to san francisco in august, UAL wants me to pay a total of $525 to change 3 tickets. Now I regret that I purchased these tickets in march, esp given the fact my August tour was not confirmed yet.
So, unless you are sure of your travel plan and the ticket prices now are significantly cheaper, I would not the tickets too far in advance given the high cost of changed tickets. this is only my opinion.

Delta is the same way. My sister and her family asked my son to join them on a trip to Cancun this July 4th, she got scared and up and cancelled the trip due to the swine flu outbreak, I believe it was back in April/May sometime. She was able to have her tickets changed to travel to another location (I believe Las Vegas) the end of July with no extra fees (waived fees because of the swine flu outbreak) while that's fine for her but it left my son out in the cold. He couldn't travel the end of July (we already have a trip planned) so he's out $350. I have spoken with Delta several times and no bending of the rules, he does have till the end of June to change the ticket without paying any fees, but he's not going to travel by himself. I explained to them several times that this ticket was cancelled due to the government and their travel advisory of traveling into Mexico. Doesn't matter since they didn't cancel any of their flights. I'm out $350 and the ticket will expire Dec 21st when she purchased the ticket. I even asked if I could use the credit for our trip to Cancun summer of 2010, no can't do. This upset me that they weren't willing to help in this situation they have their money so who cares about the passenger. I've decided to boycott Delta for their lack of willing to help. I'm also very upset at my sister for cancelling the trip 3 months before her travel date and even asked her to split the cost of the ticket with us. She got very upset for me even asking, said I'm worried about $350 when we do lots of other things with our money. I'm done with Delta and hopefully my sister and I can work things out.

Thanks for listening, this has been bugging me since she cancelled.

To the OP, you should probably take the risk of getting flamed and ask on flyertalk so that you get an answer that relates to Alaska. I know on American I cancelled my flight and was able to use the credit for a flight for my husband. So each airline is different and you really need to know how Alaska would deal with it. You may actually be able to find an answer on flyertalk to a prior question usign the search function becuase these issues come up often. Best of luck -- Suzanne

American issued a ticket for your husband with the credit from your ticket that you cancelled. I even asked Delta if they would do this for us and they said no, the new ticket has to be in the orginial passenger's name, they told me ever since 9/11 they won't do this any longer.

I actually did a search on Flyertalk and found out that the the AS T & C state that the ticket belongs to the purchaser, and if the purchaser can't be determined, to the passenger named on the ticket.

Since I would be paying for the tickets using my AS Mastercard and a companion certificate, I would be considered the owner of the ticket and could get a credit back in my name. Not sure about the date, but I think it's from the date of purchase pretty much across the board.

So who's out the $350, you or he? I don't agree that Delta should give money back to passengers whose relatives cancel trips (unless a refundable ticket). Swine flu or not, the ticket was purchased with knowledge of its terms. I'd try to find some way to use that credit.

United told me that credit would go to the passengers whose names appeared on the tickets, not to the purchaser of the tickets due to federal law

Having bought a lot of airline tickets for employees that for whatever the reason, are no longer employed with us when time for the trip comes around, my company(ies) always loses the money/value of the ticket because the ticket is issued in the employee's name even though the company paid for the ticket. Sucks but that is the way it goes.
