Rhine river cruises

Would like to cruise the Rhine from Amsterdam to Basel beginning August 21-23 for 6-9 days. I've found a cruise with Avalon Waterways beginning 8/23/09 for 7 days at $2289 pp. Any suggestions for obtaining a better deal or does anyone have any information or prior experience with Avalon Waterways? It has been a very long time since I've traveled in Europe and I was hoping to make it simple and less complicated with a cruise. At the end of the cruise I have a timeshare in the Italian Alps for a week.

Rhine River Cruise

I've not heard of that cruise company but from what I understand two of the largest operators are:

http://www.uniworld.com

http://www.vikingrivercruises.com/us/

I am constantly being sent postcards and literature on special offers from these two. I would say the cruise industry in Europe is hurting like everyone else. I would call them and play them all against each other for the best deal.

I envy you, I can almost taste the Weissen Beer now, Prost!

I know a couple who will be doing this same cruise in 2010, in the reverse direction.
From what they tell me, their price is similar to yours. It sounds like a great trip!

Resorts: Jockey Club (wk. 22); Summit @ Massunutten (U & L); Oak Knoll @ FF Glade TN.
Check out Grand Circle Tours @ www.gct.com We've done several land tours with them and have been very pleased.

Amadeus Waterways is another European river cruise company that does this route. It is a 13 day trip including 4 day land stay (in Lucerne and Zurich). Cruise only does appear to start in the $2400-2500 range.

On their website, I see availability in 2010 but not 2009. I don't know if this means that they aren't running this tour in 2009 or if it is full. The link is:

Viking River Cruises is running a 2-for-1 special, but I don't see your desired itinerary on their promo page. Perhaps a promo is so tempting that you'd consider a change in your plans? http://www.vikingrivercruises.com/of...omo/index.html

Here is Viking's Amsterdam page: http://www.vikingrivercruises.com/us...dam/index.aspx
