Warning: vacationers in the OBX

I want to share a warning for those who (like us) love the OBX and enjoy wonderful vacations there: an article in a local magazine ("Boomer") by Randy Fitzgerald (who was himself, as well as his family, victimized) alerted me to a rash of burglaries in the OBX. Be sure and lock your doors, even if just going to the beach, and keep your eyes out. Mr. Fitzgerald's house was burglarized while a number of the family was there, but lots of guests had come and gone--and you guessed it--everyone thought the man was visiting someone else.

....it's very easy to become comfortable with your surroundings and become carefree and careless. We've experienced two property crimes in the last three months (not on vacation), that we would never have expected. Be alert, be aware, be cautious and be careful; even on vacation!


PS Carcie, I just spent a wonderful week at your home resort, Dunes South!

We've exchanged in before, but rented this time from Angie and got one of the renovated oceanfront units!

It was great being able to take the dogs because my Mom was able to join us for part of the trip. Usually, we have to watch each others' pets during vacations.

Hi--glad you had fun at Dunes South. We always enjoy it there. Not the Ritz, but who at the beach needs that?

I posted the message because I truthfully, hadn't even thought about it--OBX is so friendly and seems so homey, crime was just not a consideration, and my bet was lots of other folk feel just the same. The world has changed, and just isn't as safe as it once was, sadly, as you pointed out: anywhere. We didn't always lock our doors on vacation--if we were just going to the beach, for instance--no more!
