Parking in Manhattan
In two weeks my girlfriend and I are driving from Canada to Manhattan (staying at The Pod hotel) for a four day holiday.
We're unsure whether we should drive into Manhattan and park at or near the hotel or leave the car at long-term parking at the airport and take a shuttle to the hotel. What do you think we should do? Pros and cons? |

Timeshareguy,
Are you sure you want to be driving into NYC and pay the exorbitant parking fees? The Pod Hotel charges $35 per day for a self-park garage that is about a block away and does not have in-out privileges. For comparative price Parking Garage info in NYC see http://nyc.bestparking.com/index.php Your alternative plan of leaving the car in a long-term airport lot isn't much of an alternative. Laguardia (LGA) would be the closest airport to mid-town Manhattan and is located in the Borough of Queens - about a $30-$35 cab ride away from the Pod Hotel. Add the parking fees on top of that. For information about NYC Metro Cards for riding the bus and subways see http://www.mta.info/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm#unlimited For information on how to get from point A to point B in NYC see http://www.hopstop.com/ - click on the NYC link Have a good trip Richard |

Thanks for the excellent information and links, Richard! I was especially impressed with the interactive website/map of NYC parking -- a powerful example of a global technology creating local knowledge.
A couple of follow-up questions for you, or anyone who wishes to chime in: 1) Best bet for boat tour of Manhattan. Want to go near Statue of Liberty, too. 2) Favorite restaurant for breakfast on a Saturday morning (esp. if in Greenwich Village). 3) Favorite art galleries/dealers -- we already know about the ones like the Metropolitan and the Guggenheim. We're talking here about private art dealers selling paintings and so on. Usually in big cities they're concentrated in a particular area or street. Soho? Need advice as we have limited time for this and want to spend maybe one afternoon browsing. |

Take the Staten Island ferry. Inexpensive and you get to see a lot or the area.

I second the suggestion of taking a ride on the Staten Island Ferry - its free.
Catch the ferry at the south end of Manhattan, near Battery Park. It passes near the Statue of Liberty and you'll be able to get great pictures. You have to get off the ferry on Staten Island but you can immediately reboard for the return trip to lower Manhattan. For more info see - http://www.siferry.com/ For Harbor cruises see Circle Line Sightseeing at 42nd Street - there's a variety of options including a 3-hour circumnavigation of Manhattan. For more info see http://www.circleline42.com/site/default.aspx I'd also consider a New York City Pass. You get admission to 6 famous New York attractions for $79.00 (almost half-price). Empire State Building Observatory, American Museum of Natural History and Rose Center, Guggenheim Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum fo Art and the Cloisters, and Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises or Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. If you do a Circle Line Cruise around Manhattan, I think it's an extra $5 per person to do so. Circle Line has a special ticket window for people with a City Pass Voucher (moves much faster than the regular ticket line) - you exchange the voucher for a boarding ticket, and depending on the cruise you take, pay any extra fees at that time. For more info about the New York City Pass see http://www.citypass.com/city/ny.html Richard |

Driving into Manhattan is a breeze especially if you cross over the George Washington Bridge. You should also try walking over the Manhattan Bridge for a great view of lower manhattan. We're checking into the MC on Aug 2 for 4 nights. Enjoy. Alton

We went in the spring for 2 nights and just paid the crazy hotel charge. It was easy and quick.
