Hilton Head in April
Thinking about trying for HHI next spring break - Easter week. We've never been, but the boss (DW) thinks it won't be warm enough to use the beaches. Anyone have any experience here?

It also probably won't be warm enough to swim in the outdoor pools. Grande Ocean, for example, doesn't heat any of the outdoor pools (except for the tiny lap pool). The pools were really cold when I stayed there in April a couple of year ago, and no one was using them. Steve |

Even tho you won't wish to get into the ocean past your knees, you can still walk in the surf endlessly, and BECAUSE it's not so hot, you'll probably enjoy it better. April is wonderful, altho it can be iffy when a cold front comes thru. Odds are in your favor, tho, so go for it.....April is great.
We spent the second week of April there this year and will do the same next year, already booked. We also spend 3 weeks in June there, and to be honest, we do virtually the same things----Altho we miss out on the pools in April, we still have a blast. If you want really warm temps, go farther south to Ocean Pointe in Palm Beach Shores. Anywhere north of that in April you can't really enjoy pools or ocean, "guaranteed" . jme |

I have been in HHI every April for the past 15 years and both the air temperature and water temperature varies from year to year. However, I always see folks swimming in the ocean, especially kids. Guess it depends on motivation and body temperature!

If youre looking for a drive to vacation spot in april, go for it. We been going to SC for 40 years in april, the weather is all over the place. We went to grande ocean april 12th 2009 and next year we are going to oceanwatch, myrtle beach, April 16th 2010. If you're flying, i would go to Florida!!

April of 2009
We took our two preschool children April 5-12 this past year. It was lovely, but not warm. Did tons of bike riding, wore sweaters in the evening when we went to the ocean and spent much time in the indoor pools. Both our children swam in the heated outdoor pool each day, but it felt awfully chilly to me.
The beach is perfect if relaxation, not a suntan, is your primary goal. =)SWL |
