Smile statue of liberty

My wife and I are planning on doing a day trip for the statue of liberty. Some people say visit it from the Jersey side and some say it best reached from the New York side. I will be coming up from Delaware can anyone tell me which side is the best way to reach the both Ellis Island and the Liberty Island

Considering you're coming up from Delaware it would be best to visit from the Jersey side. The same ferry company does the runs from Jersey and Manhatten to both Liberty and Ellis Island. Here is their's and the National Parks Services websites:

The most important part, be on the first ferry over in the am, at least if you want to go in. If you are not, there is a incredible wait!

FYI

There are 2 lines -- the first one to buy your ticket and the second to go through security and board the ferry. You may save some time if you split your group and have someone reserve your place in the second line while you buy tickets. I was there last month and once you bought your ticket the wait time was 1 hour till boarding.
