can you split an exchange with your relative?

If you have one week from an exchange but you cannot use the full week, can you have other family members take it over? Do you have to notify resort for the switch or just have them come in while your own family moving out? Will you be punished?

I would add them to your reservation as part of your party. What if there is a problem and they discover that you (the responsible party) are gone, and someone else is in the unit. Also - if your credit card is the only one presented at check-in, then you will be responsible for any of their charges, damage, etc.

We've done this with family in the past but, as mentioned, we added their names to the reservation so that the resort knew they were there.

If you do it at the time of the exchange you might be stuck paying for a guest certificate.

Personally, before I checked in, I would call the resort and just tell them what you're planning to do. If they throw a hissy and demand a GC, you can bite the bullet and get one. If they seem pretty casual about it, just sort it out when you get there. I've found that as long as I'm initially checking in, there's no problem. Different story if somebody else is trying to check in and I'm joining them.

YMMV, but that's the route I have taken with success in the past.

We've done it in the way past. Just told the resort when we arrived, or a day or so later, that someone else would be coming in mid-week. I think at that time they just got got the credit card of whoever was coming in.

We asked this question at a resort last spring. Their answer was that a guest certificate is needed only if we are not there to check in.

All of my resorts are small, non-chain. I have never had a problem with this. In fact if the other party is going to get there first, I just call and tell them who will be arriving and when I will arrive. Never a problem.

Maybe another benefit of owning $100 non-chain Weeks!
