I have a question about the availability or quality of medical service comparing the above two resorts, or to a larger extend, the two areas Cancun vs. PDM.

We are planning a multi-family vacation to Cancun area. GM RM got a lot of discussion recently and the review also said this is a great place to stay. So I was actually serious exploring ways to getting into GMRM or MPRM.

Now I learned sth new recently. In our group, a friend's 2yr old son had several incidents of febrile seizure in the past year. He will be 3 at the time of travel. The thing with seizure is that you never know when it's coming. Also, even though febrile seizure is considered benign and unharmful and will pass within a few minutes, you never know whether the kid's febrile seizure was provoked by some underlying condition or whether it is just simple febrile seizure which could be out-grown later. It is really a wait and see game.

Of course, our life should not be controlled by fear.... But this condition makes it necessary to be prepared and collect more information about the accessibility of medical service in case anything happens. Especially, there are many young children age 1-7 in the group. You never know whether there will be a broken arm, bumped head or other sickness during the week.

The five Royals also get high remarks and they are in Cancun which is a bigger city comparing to PDM. So comparing Royals and GM RM, are there any on-site doctors at Royals or GM RM? Or is there a pharmacy close-by or what if there is the need to get antibiotic injections for 3 days, any convenient place to go?

Anyone had experience seeking medical service while on vacation? We will certain purchase travel insurance (and bring common medicines) but the insurance covers the expense aftermath. It is better to know before hand on what to expect when a kid catches cold and gets a bad stomach or even worse...

Thanks a lot!

We were staying at Grand Mayan in RM last year; my son who is lactose intolerant forgot his pills. We found that neither the pharmacies in Playa or Cancun carried his normal pills nor were able to give us a substitute. We went to the GM Concierge; they called a doctor that seemed to be on call for the resort and got the knowledge we needed. I did feel that medical attention was pretty close at hand if needed, but also learned not to expect the pharmacies to have nearly the drugs we expect here.

There is more than one Grand Mayan resort and many Royal Mayan resorts.
It would be helpful when you first mention a resort acronym to spell out the resort name your are referring to and perhaps the location in Mexico too and then put the acronym in parentheses (e.g., Grand Mayan Riviera Maya (Playa Del Carmen, Mexico - GMRM).

This would be helpful to readers who are not familiar with the resorts you are referring to.

What does PDM refer to?

Need more info to provide medical advice.

Thanks

Richard

sorry, my bad.

Should be Grand Mayan Riviera Maya at Playa De Carmen (PDC) instead of PDM.

Thanks a lot!

GM & Medical Facilites

About 18 months ago while at the GM in Acapulco and our friend had a "boil" or some kind of infection on his back. He had it when he arrived and it got progressively worse. The day before we were to leave, it was so painful that he went to see the doctor that was on call. Because of his infection, he needed out-patient surgery and they called a surgeon. This was done at the on-site clinic and he was billed about $500 US on his bill. (He submitted this to his insurance and was reimbursed.) When he got home, his doctor in Kansas said that everything looked great and the doctors in Mexico had done just what they would have.

The point is - ALL Mayan Palace and Grand Mayans have doctors on-site or on-call. They generally have top-notch doctors because of their clientele.

There is only one Royal Mayan resort; it is part of the Royal Resorts family - maybe you meant "many Royal resorts"?

In any case, there is a doctor in the Royal Caribbean (center resort of the Tri-Royals - Royal Mayan, Royal Caribbean, and Royal Islander). When the doctor's office is closed, there is a doctor on call 24/7.

I have used the doctor's office several times, and been happy with the service. Once was for an allergic reaction, and I don't remember the other time - nothing terribly serious. The mini-markets in the Royals stock common OTC and Rx pharmaceuticals, and for less common things there are pharmacies in Cancun.

The Grand Mayan - Riviera Maya and Grand Mayan - Nuevo Vallarta both have doctors on site. My wife went to the doctor at both resorts and was quite satisfied.

PJ -

Thanks for the clarification - yes, I meant many Royal resorts.

I was frustrated with trying to figure out the acronyms and whether both resorts were on the east coast of Mexico or whether one was on the east coast and the other on the west coast.

At any rate, for Tiff - if you haven't already seen it - here's a previous Tug thread on Medical Evacuation Travel Insurance

Richard,

Thank you so much for pointing me to that tread and lots of useful information in it! Really appreciate it!

With large groups consist of young kids and seniors, travel insurance is definitely necessary!

Thanks again!
