Hi everyone, we just started our trip to St. John at the WSJ so I thought I would start a trip report thread. It will be difficult to keep up with but I'll do my best. Also, others have done much more thorough and more interesting trip reports (I know I'm not as clever or funny as DavidnRobin!) so I'll try to slant it from the perspective of a new visitor (none in our party have ever been here) and someone traveling with kids.

We (my wife Jennifer, 9-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter) left from LAX on Sat night - took the red eye on American Airlines to Puerto Rico. Jen and kids sleep fine on a plane but if I ever do the red eye again I'm going to invest in those expensive Bose Quiet Comfort headphones I keep reading about. Crying (screaming actually) baby started at about 1 am and continued every half hour or so. At first I felt sorry for the kid and his parents then I started getting angry - why on earth isn't anyone getting up to walk the baby and try to comfort him - just let him scream his head off... Anyway, after about 5th screaming episode the flight attendant (he too was probably sick of the screaming) came over and encouraged the father to walk the baby, which of course put him right to sleep...until the next episode. Anyway, after a 1.5 hour layover in the Puerto Rico airport, we took the American Eagle to St Thomas - less than 1/2 hour from PR to STT.

We originally planned to save some $ and not take the Westin Ferry, but when we arrived at the STT airport they said that the ferry would be leaving at 12:45 and it was already 12:25 so we figured it was meant to be. Ferry ride was nice although no drinks were given or offered. We were concerned because Jen gets seasick very easily but the dramamine did the trick.

Our real stay starts on Fri 7/30 in a 3 bedroom Bay Vista Villa, however, we added 5 nights prior to our stay in the hotel using starpoints. Regular room would have been 12,000 SP per night but we chose a ocean view for 13,500 SPs. 54,000 for the five nights - stay 4 nights and 5th is free. They first put us in a nice room but it did not have a balcony so we asked for one with a balcony so we traded the 2 double beds for one with a king and balcony. Very nice room even though we can't wait for the comfort of a villa.

The grounds here are great. Very beautiful (that is an understatement), spacious and well maintained. The hotel rooms are beginning to show their age and could use some touching up, however, don't believe some of the negative reports that you read on Tripadvisor. When we got here on Sunday we figured we would just get acquainted with the resort so we ate at on-site at Snorkels. Food was fine - nothing fancy but fine. $50 for the four of us. We then swam in the pool and then the beach and went to sleep early to catch up.

Today (Monday) we took the 2 hour tour of the island that is offered by Westin. $75 for the 4 of us ($25 for adults and $12.50 kids 7 and up). Driver was very friendly and knowledgeable. He is a retired cop from St. Thomas who moved to St. John after retiring. The trip was probably expensive for what we did but it helped get us oriented to the island and see where things are. If you have never been to a small island (which we have not), you don't really realize how small it is until you're here. You can't really get lost here if you are on a road - there are really only 5 paved roads. If you do get lost you just keep going and will hit either the ocean or an identifiable marker that can be found on any decent map that you pick up at WSJ or at airport. The tour takes you from WSJ through the north shore road and then down to center line road through the middle of the island. Keep in mind that when you are in the center of the island you can still see water (as long as there aren't any hills between you and the ocean. It turned out to be more than 2 hours - about 2.5.

After the tour we came back to our room for a while and then went into town (Cruz Bay). We walked into Cruz Bay which is about a 20 minute walk from WSJ. Very hilly once you pass the St. John Market but not a terrible walk. The only scary part is that the cars come so close to the side of the road (there aren't sidewalks for most of the hilly portion of the walk) so we had to stop and move as close to the side as possible. If you are coming with kids don't try to walk to Cruz Bay if your kids are very young or not athletic (our kids are very active in sports year-round so they could easily handle the walking). We were going to eat at The Fish Trap but it is closed on Mondays - I was craving seafood, oh well. We walked around checking out the town and wound up eating at JJ's. We don't recommend this place - food was adequate, although Jen did like her fish sandwich, but the wait for the food was ridiculous. The waittress did apologize a few times so we are thinking that the wait is unusual but still. We won't need to go back there. $75 for the four of us. Took a taxi back to Westin - $20 for taxi back to WSJ.

We're not sure about tomorrow - maybe take taxi to Cinnamon Bay or perhaps take a kayak or dinghy (non motorized - kayaks, peddle bikes, etc are free for guests) here on site.

Thanks for taking the time for the "rookie" perspective. Enjoy your trip. Post some pics if you get a chance while there or after you get back (of the hotel room too) Remember me while you are there! For the VERY little I did to help you get this exchange I hope, when I can arrange time to go, a little karma comes back my way. Enjoy and relax. You are on "Island Time" now!

Hi Captron, we will think of you every day and thanks again (a few months ago Captron posted on TUG that there was availability at WSJ and we were fortunate enough to call and get a reservation using Staroptions!). We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Captron and TUG, of course. I'll try posting pics maybe someone can give me some directions (I'm using my wife's mac laptop and i'm not very familiar with macs - use a PC). As for karma, we will bring some karma back with us and send it your way!!!

excellent report - we have never walked from WSJ-Cruz Bay (and don't think I would over Jacob's Ladder - steep hill beyond STJ Market - too dangerous - not too mention too hot/humid).

enjoy your trip
Salt Pond Bay...

added - having just travelled back/forth from SF to Basel two times in 3 weeks - the Bose QC15 ($300) is the best travel investment I have ever made - on my last flight back to SFO (11.5 hrs) we had 2 crying babies in Biz class.

renting a 4WD vehicle on STT for 7 days cost ~$400 (+ $60RT for car barge) - the freedom and flexibility it adds to access the island is worth the cost (IMO) - especially at $110/pp RT for the Westin ferry

Ok, if you ever get the chance to come to St. John/WSJ PLEASE do yourself a favor and do so! This place is wonderful.

Tuesday:
Woke up a little later than we expected to, had breakfast in the room -coffee, cereal, etc. and then took the taxi to Cinnamon Bay. A little scary because it rained (poured actually) as soon as the taxi headed out of WSJ but only lasted about 10 minutes. By the time we arrived at Cinnamon the day was absolutely perfect. We bought sandwiches & drinks at the Mango Deli at WSJ which we packed for lunch. Had a great time at Cinnamon; we walked all the way to the far right (if you're standing in front of the beach after walking through the campground and we were all by ourselves - no one within 100 feet or more. The water was about 83 degrees (my estimate, not sure if that is accurate) and absolutely clear. Feels like a warm bath. Snorkeling was ok but as they say in golf, the worst day (snorkeling, golfing, etc) is better than the best day at work. :D A nearly perfect day was coming to an end when my daughter spotted a sting ray just 20 feet off shore. She is so cute - she thought it was dead and that there were "three fish eating it", when in reality the ray had the hitchhikers following it around. We followed the ray around for about 10 minutes until it swam off.

Got back to WSJ at about 6:00 and we were too tired to head into town so we just got a couple of pizzas at Mango Deli (Pizza was actually pretty decent - one of the best food bargains we had - 2 pizzas was about $40 - not huge but decent considering it was prepared on site.

David (DavidNRobin) commented earlier about the car rental. Our original intent was to not rent a car, however, we probably going to rent one for at least part of our stay (getting sick of paying $40 one way on a taxi). The cons of renting the car are: driving on the wrong side of the road (I grew up driving Los Angeles freeways so nothing could really scare me in a vehicle) :ignore: ; finding parking is difficult, especially in Cruz Bay; parking at WSJ not great for stay in Bay Vista section. However, after a few days we are becoming fairly well acquainted with the area (the north shore at least) and the autonomy (not to mention the cost savings) would be worth the trouble. Basically, for a family of four, if we go to more than one place per day (beach and then into town for dinner), it becomes cheaper to rent the car. Plus if we rent a car, we have so much more autonomy and don't feel that we have to stay a certain time to justify the cab fair (not that we would but...)

Wednesday:
Woke up late again (this is becoming a pattern) and couldn't decide between going to Caneel Bay Resort/Beaches or Trunk Bay Beach and opted to go to Trunk Bay. Initial impression was that it was not quite as nice as Cinnamon but maybe that was because it was a bit more crowded. Talked to some nice honeymooners in the water (remembered our honeymoon 13 years ago at the Atlantis in Bahamas (before HRA was there). Made us want to go back and visit HRA...next time maybe Captron could find us a reservation... :D

About 10 minutes into our trip it started raining pretty hard. No big deal except I have my camera in the backpack...I knew we should have bought the waterproof Olympus camera... waited too long oh well, get one for next year. Rain passed after 10 minutes or so and it turned out to be another beautiful day. Jennifer makes comment that she is not sure that she'll want to go back to Maui after St. John (oh crap, I love Maui...) We again had sandwiches that we bought at Mango Deli ate lunch at beach. Snorkeling not great on left side of Trunk Bay but the right side, just before the point, has an interesting snorkeling area with the "underwater tunnel". Not really a tunnel but they have 3 buoys that you swim to in order (white red blue) and as you snorkel along there are plaques laid in the floor of the ocean that tell you what you are looking at. My 9-year-old didn't think he could make the whole trek because it looks pretty far out there when you're standing on shore but he made it easily. My daughter (7) is good about recognizing her limits and passed. As the crowd started disappearing we no longer felt that Cinnamon was that much nicer than Trunk (if someone gives you $1million would you prefer them in $100 or $20, either way, you're happy). We met a very nice couple - wife volunteered to take some pics of us standing in the ocean...maybe we found another Christmas card picture. They have been coming to St. John for 10 years in a row, starting when their kids were in high school and now their kids are on their own so they still come without the kids. Gave us some pointers for different (more secluded) beaches to go to when we rent the car. It seems like St. John is one of those wonderful places that people who know about it want to keep it a secret so it doesn't get ruined with too many visitors...

Left beach (oh crap, another $40 for the taxi back to WSJ...really need to rent a car...) Jennifer's sister and her family (husband, 7-year-old daughter, 4-year-old son, and 1-year-old son) came in today. They'll be staying a couple of days in the hotel/resort and then joining us in the villa for the last 7 days. Side note - something really crappy happened to them. They missed their flight (from LAX) even though they arrived MORE than 2 hours before the flight. Apparently, when they made the reservation they were not told that they needed to purchase a special "lap ticket" for their infant (10% the price of the mother's ticket). The sad part is that they wouldn't have cared about paying for the ticket, they just were not told about it so they never bought it. Anyway, by the time they purchased it and remade their reservation, they missed their flight. Turned out fine because they were put on a different flight that had a lesser layover. Anyway, they were already checked in when we got back from Trunk Bay but they were tired so they're going to bed early we'll join up with them tomorrow.

Dinner - hey, only $20 taxi to "town", which is Cruz Bay. We opt not to head into town (REALLY need to rent a car now) and eat here on site. (Another side note...David said he would not walk from from WSJ to Cruz Bay, but he is from San Francisco area, so probably a bit wimpy...haha, just some Los Angeles humor - we have to make fun of those Bay area guys when we can... David, please don't tell me you're a Giants fan!) :p All joking aside, I learned MORE from David's trip reports about what to do, expect, etc. here in St. John than I did from any of our tourbooks. Thanks again David!

Eat dinner at the Beach Cafe here at WSJ, which overlooks the beach/dock in front of resort. We weren't expecting much as we don't usually love the restaurants at hotels/resorts but have to say it was pretty good. I had the seafood linguini ($28) and it was pretty good. Total bill was $100 for the four of us. By the way, for those of you who have never been here, the beach here in front of the WSJ is one of the worst on the island (not that I've been to that many yet but this is according to the tourbooks and just about everyone that you talk to). Other than the convenience of being right here on site, it is also appealing because they have a few play items - a couple of trampolines and a brick wall that you can swim to and jump off. However, after going to Cinnamon and Trunk, I have to say that it would be hard to spend too much time here at this beach. My kids are grossed out by the fact that it is "grassy" as you walk into it for the first 50 or 60 feet. Anyway, we're probably beginning to sound like beach snobs so I'll stop... WSJ is located in Great Cruz Bay, which is NOT Cruz Bay. When locals say "town", they're referring to Cruz Bay.

By the way, and this is a total sidebar, there is a WSJ Pool Villa (Hillside) fixed week 33 (2nd to 3rd week in August) that was just listed on Ebay. Beginning bid $25,000, buy it now price $35,000. Being sold by the owner who has no ebay history. I should probably start a new thread to let people know about that ebay listing.

According to some folks we spoke to today, weather was actually pretty bad last week but has been really good this week. Limited rain, mostly over night only. Keep track of the weather prior to coming. I was following the St. John weather on Weatherbug on my blackberry for about two weeks prior to coming. Was concerned because there seemed to be more rain than normal, however, it has been better this week (maybe we brought some dry So Cal weather with us).

Actually it's been cold and foggy here in So Cal all week (all summer, really) so you are not missing anything.

K

Nice trip report! You will still love Maui but St John just gets into your soul and makes you feel warm and comfortable! It did for us, we fell in love with it when we went for the first time 2 years ago! Enjoy the rest of your trip and keep the reports coming!

Awesome report, keep it coming!

(and I'll get right to work on that HRA week for you! :D )

I'm loving your report also -- wish I was there!

We did the whole taxi/rental car dilemma also. Usually rent a jeep, but this year we were there for 2 weeks and decided we'd rather spend the $ on other things. There were only 3 of us, so $40 RT to town with a tip ... slightly more to beaches, but never more than a rental car if we only did one trip per day (if we traveled to beaches during the day, we ate in at night ... if we hung out at the resort during the day, we ate dinner in town). We did end up renting one for a couple of days the second week so we could go to Coral Bay, eat at Miss Lucy's and Skinny Legs, etc -- you haven't lived until you drive on the wrong side of the road, over big hills with the sun in your eyes, dodging donkeys, roosters -- and even a couple of hogs this year!! For trips to Coral Bay or Salt Pond, it's definitely cheaper to have a car ... but now that there's a grocery store within walking distance, we didn't mind not having the car the rest of the time.

Keep your report coming -- I'm living vicariously through you this week!

Loving the trip report - try going to Trunk Bay at 4pm - but watch out for the no-see-ums (spray legs and arms - cover torso - true for all beaches at sunset) - they can be viscious and you can't see them (but they are there).

LET'S GO GIANTS! :cheer:

No way we are walking from WSJ to Cruz Bay - not without adequate walking area (and never at night...) - I value our lives. Try and get on the NPS guided Reef Bay Trial walk - best bargain on island. Plus - do the Cinnamon Bay Trail loop (easy) thru the ruins and up the hill - we saw 2 deer there (rare).

Also - go to Lameshur Bay (furthest point - clockwise thru Coral Bay - but must have 4WD - it is bumpy at 1st, but it settles out) - not the rocky beach - the sandy one.

Thursday:
Another day in paradise. Spent the day at the beach in Caneel Bay, adjacent to Caneel Bay Resort. The Caneel Bay Resort is the other "large/fancy" resort in St. John. Not that there aren't other wonderful places to stay, but Caneel and WSJ are the biggies, apparently. The resort is famous for being "eco friendly" as the rooms don't have TVs or phones (among other reasons for being eco friendly). Rockefeller, who donated much of the land in St. John to the US parks (read more about that elsewhere) also conceived this resort. Anyway, since the beach is in front of the resort (all beaches on St. John can be used even if you're not staying at the resort that is in front of the beach), there are chairs, rafts, etc. that we (those not staying at the resort) cannot use. Jennifer was a bit disappointed with this beach, when comparing it to the last two we visited here (Cinnamon and Trunk), however, when I asked her to compare it to the beaches back home (Malibu, Zuma, Ventura, etc.) she laughed. I guess Caneel isn't that bad after all. ;) Anyway, i was very surprised (shocked actually) at how good the snorkeling was right there on the right side of the beach. Quite a bit of diversity in the snorkeling!

We had another great day. Wonderful weather - rained at the end of our stay for about 10 minutes, but otherwise perfect. Left Caneel about 5pm and got back to WSJ about 5:20. Showered and went to dinner. Brother-in-law has flu so he didn't go to beach with us but was up to go to dinner. We decide to eat on site again so he doesn't have to travel too much. If he is not feeling better by tomorrow he is on his own.

Ate at the Beach Cafe again. $125 for the four of us. I had a "local favorite" the steak churrasco. I'm Cuban so this tasted like something my mom would make when she's making authentic Cuban food. Must say I was again pleased....but bro-in-law is still on his own if he's not feeling better by tomorrow because we really want to get out to some of the restaurants that we have read about. By the way, not only am I going home broke but I will probably weigh an extra ten pounds!!! Is it possible for a human being to gain 10 lbs in 12 days? I don't know but it looks like I'm trying real hard!

Tomorrow is "moving day" - we move from the resort/hotel room to our villa. Therefore we scheduled it as our only "stay at the resort/pool day" so we agreed to do the timeshare sales pitch... I mean "owner's update". They give us a free lunch and our choice of $125 resort credit or 6,000 starpoints. I timed it just right so our room should be ready in the middle of our presentation (if not sooner). Could help expedite the presentation. I'll ask for a walk through of the different villas since this is our first trip to WSJ; I'd love to see the difference between the different villa types. I'll take pics. By the way, sorry I haven't been posting pics but I just realized that Jen's laptop (dumb mac!) doesn't even have the...whatever you call those connectors for the different types of media...I can't put my camera's compact flash into her laptop. Anyway, I've already taken over 500 pics so I'll post some when I get back home and can use a real computer (not a mac!) :wall: :wall: :wall:

Too bad you didn't walk down to Honeymoon beach from Caneel - a short flat walk (to the left facing ocean). It is a great beach - we have spent entire days there more than once. On the other side of Honeymoon is Salomon that is an easy/fun snorkle around the rangers house (best job location in world).

Enjoy the villas - don't worry - its water weight :D

Wow...it sounds like you are loving St John, just as we did a few weeks ago. You are bringing back so many memories!!! If you get a chance, definitely go to the BVI's....and if you go to Jost Van Dyke, you have to eat lunch at a place called, "One Love". It's delicious! Have a blast!!! Wish we were still there....

Sheri

Will be there in 11 months, 14 days...nothing matters between now and then - just WAITING until I'm there!:whoopie:
