Has anyone ever heard of Smart Choice Vacation, Inc.? They are offering to sell my parents Wyndham points but are requesting money up front from them. I've read the articles on this website and I know any place that requests money up front is probably a scam, but I can't find anything on Smart Choice Vacation on the Better Business Bureau website or any comments about them on the web.

ANY company with a large upfront fee is a scam - no getting around it.

The fact that you can't find any info. just means that they are NEW scammers!

I have dealt with a company called SmartChoice TimeShare Resales (located in AZ) - http://www.timeshareaz.com/
I assume (hopefully) it IS NOT the same company as Smart Choice Vacation - as SmartChoice TimeShare Resales is reputable in my experience as a buyer.

I had exactly the same thought as David, having recently had a perfect transaction with SmartChoice Timeshare Resales (I, too, was the purchaser).

So my question of OP is whether the company in question is from Scottsdale, Arizona.

So based on that alone how would they sell your parents or any other timeshare?

Avoid them like you would any telesales cold call asking for your money.

I checked - SmartChoice Timeshare Resales - http://www.timeshareaz.com/ - does not charge upfront fees - so it is not the same outfit.

As many here will warn you - never pay an upfront fee to sale your timeshare.

SmartChoice Timeshare Resales is NOT affiliated with Smartchoice Vacations!

I am Judy Rulli, the President and Designated Broker of SmartChoice Timeshare Resales in Scottsdale, AZ. For those who have posted kind words about our company and votes of confidence that we are not charging upfront fees, thank you! And I appreciate the opportunity to set the record straight on the subject of Smartchoice VACATIONS.

We have been inundated with calls for the past two weeks from timeshare owners who have been contacted by phone by Smartchoice Vacations. When these owners search online for “SmartChoice” they are finding our website and company, SmartChoice Timeshare Resales, www.timeshareAZ.com, and calling us to see if we are the "SmartChoice" who called them with a buyer for their timeshare, and to ask if the "offer" is legitimate.

They all tell a similar story. Smartchoice Vacations (SCV) phoned them and said they have a $4,000 deposit “in hand” from a buyer who is willing to pay $20,000 for their timeshare. The buyer wants to close quickly and the owner will receive a check in 2-3 business days, BUT, the seller has to pay $2,000 for a title search and deed preparation to prove they have clear title. The seller is promised a refund of the $2,000 after closing (in addition to the $20k purchase price), but SCV has to receive the $2,000 by cashier's check or credit card before the transaction can close...and of course, they need it right away or they may lose the buyer.

Fortunately, most of the callers were checking on SC Vacations BEFORE they took the bait, but three callers had already mailed cashier's checks for $2,000 to the address they were given (2393 S. Congress Ave. Suite 200, W. Palm Beach, FL 33406). One had given a credit card number but, after talking with me, immediately called to block the charge.

I spoke with the Florida Attorney General's Office at length this morning, and I encourage anyone who has been contacted by SmartChoice VACATIONS to file a complaint immediately. The Florida Attorney General's website is www.myfloridalegal.com. Under "Consumer Protection" you can file a complaint online or print a form to fax or mail. In order to prosecute this kind of activity, they need to know just how many people are being solicited, and how much money is being collected. Filing complaints with the BBB, National Assoc. of Consumer Affairs and Consumer Affairs USA will also help protect potential victims. There are links to all of these sites at www.ltrba.com.

I can’t tell you how painful it is to be on the phone with an 82-year old man who is sobbing out loud because he just learned the $2,000 he needs for food, rent, and groceries isn’t likely to be refunded. And it is infuriating to have this kind of activity being perpetrated by a company using a name so similar to ours.

I apologize for the lengthy post but sincerely appreciate this forum and the information it provides to consumers!

Thanks for setting the record straight.

(Note to others: I bought a Kauai Beach Club unit through Judy within the past two months.)

Hi Judy - I thought you may chime in. Thanks. I almost contacted you about this because of the similar name and possible confusion. These TS scammers are scum and will get their due someday (hopefully). We are still enjoying the WKV 1Bd Plat/Prem we bought from you. - David

Another TUGGER here to chime in for support of Judy and her staff. They have provided us with excellent service, stellar communication, followup and timely turnaround. Very professional group to work with!

No need to apologize for the length of your post Judy. It was necessary given the potential for confusion and this is what TUG is all about! Getting the word out there! :cheer:

Thank you everyone for you advice. I have passed on the info for SmartChoice, AZ to my parents. Thanks again!

I see that you have checked about a number of these companies for your parents. There is one very easy rule of thumb that you can pass on to them about these companies - If a company charges a large upfront fee, it's a scam. Plain and simple.

It sounds like your parents have a timeshare they want to get rid of. In this market most timeshares are selling for 0-10% of retail. That may be hard for them to accept, but the bottom line is that they will probably have to give it away, and may be lucky to do that.

Look at it this way - the resale market stinks right now - they can't change that by spending large sums of money to try to sell their timeshare. They are just throwing good money after bad.

Either that or they are OLD scammers who just changed their name becuz some state attorney general was about to shut 'em down. With a new name, they figure they throw off the wolf-pack for a few weeks, at least.

How about the cohort?

Heinz, her partner in crime, got an even lighter sentence, 14 months in the slammer and $75K restitution.
