Unhappy Flyi/Independence Air---1 foot in the grave &

Flyi and Independence Air have one foot in the grave and another on a banana peel as they say. There was an article in today's newspaper stating they were laying off many of their senior pilots and had very little hope of coming out of this reorganization process.

The article went on to say that Flyi's Portland maine to Dulles' 3 daily flights were expected to end sooner rather than later. If any Tugger is holding Flyi tickets for the near term, I would suggest making back up arrangements.

JMHO of course

That would be disappointing for those of us who fly into Portland...wasn't there something in the last edition of the frequent flyer newsletter about United making an offer for Independence?

Yes, I believe UA is bidding on DH's slots at IAD A terminal. RIP to G, IMO...hope it goes through. G terminal is about as much an embarassment to UA as the SFO bus station (remote UX terminal).

Only downside has been the uptick in fares O&D and cx through IAD, after UA killed DH with cheap fares.

Flyi is expected to cease operations 1/7/06 unless a major investor is found to infuse money into the airline. At this late date, that's doubtful.

Latest word, apparently from Flyi, is that they will cease operations on 1/5/06

Independence air belly up

So what does one do with a Independence air ticket? Frame it for posterity or will other airlines honor it?

Flyi's website said they'd request that the bankruptcy court allow refunds for unused tickets. Good luck with that. I'm sure other investors are going to be in line first.

Other airlines that fly the same routes are supposed to honor Flyi's tickets on a standby basis. They are allowed to charge $50 (each way I think) for this service. I believe if you have an e-ticket (and who doesn't), you'll need to get Flyi to issue you a paper ticket to exchange for the standby ticket on another airline. I'm pretty sure this must be done within 60 days.

One other option might be to challange the charge on you're credit card. I've read on other forum's that it's possible to get the charges refunded that way but I've never looked into it myself.

I just saw on another forum where someone holding a Flyi ticket called to ask when the bankruptcy court might approve (or deny) refunds for passengers holding tickets after the date to cease operations. They posted that the reservation agent was able to issue them a refund to their credit card right then.

I don't know if this was an isolated incident but, I'd be calling if I was holding a ticket and try to get a refund before they shut down forever.

independence air

Yes, I always appreciate the advice from Tug members! I have learned many valuable lessons. All TS owners should be part of Tug. In this case, however, what was suggested merely confirmed my original course of action, but that didn't make me less appreciative. As a pragmatist, I give the advice my greatest recommendation- "it worked!" Thanks DougP!

If only it was an original thought for me. As it is, I was just passing along advice I learned from someone else. I hope others were able to get refunds before Flyi closed their doors for good.
