Booking Tips for 8 days in Hawaii

If you were trying to get 8 days in a basic two bedroom lagoon tower room in Honolulu in prime season what would your strategy be? I am ten months out at this point. From what I have gathered, you can no longer start with 3 days and add days as you go. Thus, I think there are two ways to do this. First, make a four day reservation and then hope to make another four day reservation, or just wait and hope 8 days are available. I don't really mind paying the $49 fee twice if that will (probably) make sure I get all 8 days, as switching buildings or moving to a different hotel would be a real nightmare. I am sinking a boatload of frequent flier points into this trip and want to make sure the lodging part goes smoothly.

I truly appreciate any responses or advice.

You can still do the one day add-on, but you have to call in to do it during business hours. By then the day may not be there, but always worth a try.

"Classic" reservations are back, I think you can do the one day add on again.

When you change a reservation, it goes to Revolution, not Classic, which doesn't let you do the add on.

Since you have to book a minimum of three days, calling every other day to add on two days should work.

Yeah, this defeats the purpose of getting Classic back

Is this a glitch or is the inability to add a day the "new normal?"

It's the new normal.

I wonder if this is a way to stop the resale experts from holding inventory and renting it until it sells?

The experts know how to book the good weeks which frustrates other owners?

Just guessing of course.

Funny that when I made a reservation for early next year at King's Land, the young lady on the phone told me to book three days and add a day each day.

I guess it worked because there was so much inventory available it was no problem.

I need 4 days next summer in Oahu. We'll see if I get lucky!

Correct. If your current reservation exists in another room, you can essentially rebook that other room with the additional day during a reservation change. If your current reservation isn't available in another room you are out of luck. You cannot "change" to your existing reservation plus a day.

It seems to make Home Week reservations more valuable and lessens the points are points argument.

I guess it depend on when do you want it. I just booked 14 days two bedrooms for February 2014 in Lagoon Tower last week. There is a lots availabilities for 2014 February when I looked at it. I think they classify February to be prime season.

One thing I see referenced all the time is calling to add extra days since revolution won't let you do it if only one unit available. But I thought a reservation originally booked online couldn't be modified by calling it had to be done online.

That's how it's supposed to work. But the online system is broken, so you have to call in to make changes most of the time. I wanted to drop one day from a reservation and had to call in since Revolution, the default change system, won't let you make any changes.

That's good that they don't enforce the rule since the res system is broken I thought they were just going to say to bad.

Nor does Classic show the newer properties like Elara and Kings' Land Phase 2.

I had problem booking my home week in my home resort with Evolution. After I tried a dozen times and I switched to classic. It worked with classic. I do not know why classic worked and Evolution did not work.

Maybe because there is no Evolution? :crash:

(It's called Revolution. But it's not really that, either.)

Thanks for all the advice, here is what I ended up doing...

I did not have enough points for 7 days in a premier 2 bedroom in the lagoon tower, but from what I have read here those rooms are fabulous. So I booked a premier for 3 days to start the trip off (these are weekdays, so its a pretty good deal points wise in my book). I then booked 4 days in a standard 2 bedroom three days later, to give us 7 total days.

I realize that I had to pay $49 twice, and we have to switch rooms on the fourth day, but my wife is happy we will get housekeeping, in a way, in the middle of the stay. On the day we are homeless for six hours we will rent a car and hit the north shore, so it will not be as inconvenient as it might seem. Also, we get a little taste of the premier rooms to start the trip, which we would not have been able to do otherwise. Total points, about 7800.

From what I have seen, any four star hotel room in Waikiki during this time (spring break-ish) is about $250 per night. This makes the 2 bedroom worth at least $500 per night (assigning no value to the kitchen and living area, which both obviously have value), or $3500 for the trip. At only about $1600 worth of maintenance fees for the 7800 points, I feel like this one trip has paid for a good chunk of my original purchase price.

I love TUG and HGVC!

RE:Result

Is your premiere penthouse or oceanfront? The penthouses are wonderful, although bedrooms are upstairs. Oceanfront depends on which floor. Units don't get assigned till day of check-in so hope for a mid to high floor.

Either way, they are very nice units. I wanna go back...

Penthouse

I am not sure, how can I tell? I would imagine I don't have the penthouse, as I see nothing indicating I do on the reservation.

KL units are all listed together, phase 2 are the lower point values.

Not true.

For example, in the Classic listings for November 2013, there are four 1-Bedroom Plus choices. Choose any for a Wednesday check-in and Saturday check-out, and each quotes a points total of 3720.

Now go to Revolution. Note the four 1-Bedroom Plus choices for Bldg. 1-11 (Phase 1) just as in Classic (Wed - Sat, 3720 pts). Then note the two additional 1-Bedroom Plus choices for Bldg. 21-22 (Phase 2).

Classic does not show KL Phase 2.
