UAL online booking bonus miles

United offers an extra 1,000 miles for trips booked through their online site. In the past I've booked my husband's flight and mine separately through our respective Mileage Plus sites to make sure we each get the bonus. I'm wondering if that's necessary. If I book both flights at the same time through my account and make sure his MP number is on his ticket, would he still get his own 1,000 mile bonus?

Only one ticket in an itinerary qualifies for the online booking bonus. See post #4 in this FlyerTalk thread for the wording of the response you would get if you sent UA a message asking the same question.

Note also that by booking tickets separately, you run a slight risk that when flight schedules change, often resulting in the loss of seat assignments in UA's system, you might wind up sitting in non-adjacent seats.

Thanks for the link Dave. That's what I was afraid of and why I've always booked the tickets separately. As you point out, we run the risk of having the seat assignments changed when (not even "if" it seems) UA changes our flight schedule. (Our April trip from San Francisco to San Diego has been changed twice now!) But it's worth the extra 1,000 miles for each of us to do it separately.

United air miles are very important to me and collect and try to use them faithfully, and have had pretty decent luck with United. However, last time when our flight to Hawaii was canceled, more stress and mess then I care to deal with here, but I was told UAL stands for "you ain't leavin'". And we didn't.

For what it is worth, they do seem to change their schedule, seats, etc. more than I am comfortable with, but like the bonus miles, so what do we do?

Cancelled flights to Hawaii

Does anyone have an idea of how often this happens on United? I have my husband traveling there on FF miles in Sept. I have yet to buy my ticket. But I'd be very upset if my week's vacation got shortened by a cancelled flight.

UA is no different from any other airline. All airlines routinely change their schedules from time to time to meet changing demand, needed schedule changes, etc.

I fly approximately 20 trips per year on UA, sometimes with complicated itineraries. I typically buy my tickets three to six months in advance and more often than not there are usually itinerary changes after I buy the ticket and before I fly.

Every now and then, I have to call to get an adjustment in my itinerary after UA makes a change to my schedule that doesn't fit my needs. Not a big deal.

Buy your ticket and don't worry about it. Check your itinerary fairly often in "My Itineraries" on UA's site (or the comparable section of the airline's site if you buy tickets on another airline) for changes.

Call the airline to discuss alternatives if there is a change in your schedule that causes a problem for you. Before you call, come up with an itinerary on the airline that will meet your needs. Then call.
