A few weeks ago I exchanged for a week at the Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta for checkin in September. This is for the honeymoon of one of my employee's daughters. Much work had gone in to choosing this resort from all the Mexico resorts available by myself, my employee, her daughter and her daughter's fiance. The daughter just received the guest certificate a few days ago.

I was checking my exchanges online last night and saw new info on the exchange: 1/5 YEAR RULE IS STRICTLY ENFORCED FOR ANY MAYAN RESORTS (GRAND MAYAN, MAYAN PALACE AND SEA GARDEN). A 2ND UNIT SAME WEEK OR CONSECUTIVE WEEKS MAY BE CONFIRMED WITH GUEST CERTIFICATE.** EXCEPTIONS FOR THESE RULES WILL BE CANCELLED* NO GRAND MAYAN, MAYAN AND/OR SEA GARDEN MEMBERS ARE ALLOWED TO CONFIRM TO ANY MAYAN RESORTS.**NO EXCEPTIONS**

I became concerned because I had sent someone else to the Grand Mayan Riviera Maya with a GC last October (They'd had a wonderful time except for when they were evacuated for the hurricane 4 days into their vacation. ;) )

I called RCI to check that my current confirmation would be OK. The VC said that the 1 in 5 had been instituted last week. She spoke to her supervisor, came back and said that my currrent confirmation would be cancelled!

Madge, my confirmation had been made before the rules changed. It had been my understanding from the language that had been discussed in the previous Mayan thread that I was allowed to exchange into other resorts in the Mayan system. Should Mayan resorts not honor exchanges made before they changed the rules?

charford,

I'll check to see if Mayan is grandfathering any members who confirmed under the old rules. Thanks for the question.

There are so many conflicting statements. Madge, you say that we can go back to a Mayan Palace, just not the one we exchanged into and yet I have an email from someone at RCI saying that you cannot return to any Mayan Palaces for five years. Mexican airfare is expensive and we ought to be able to get accurate information. So please, can we have the official MP rules in user friendly language.

Charford,

I verified with our staff in Mexico that exchanges confirmed under the old Mayan rules will be honored. Sorry for the distress this caused you.

Linda74,

As of March 20, 2006, Mayan modified their exchange rules. They now enforce a one-in-five year rule among all Mayan properties, including Grand Mayan, Mayan Palace, and Sea Garden. However, as I mentioned to charford, all exchanges confirmed under the old rules will be honored.

Personally, I think the new rule sucks. The old rule sucked too. I would like to request that RCI discontinue any 1 in 4 rules and disaffiliate with any resorts that feel the need to have one. There are no other exchange companies with this rule. It's rediculous. Where can I send my complaints?

jimbiggs,

Our feeling is that it's better to offer a resort once in 4 or 5 years than not at all in many cases.

You are welcome to express your concerns by e-mail to feedback@rci.com. Please enter TUG in the subject line, and the Communications Team will be pleased to respond.

I agree but to be fair and have a balanced trading system shouldn't Mayan Palace owners also be restricted from trading into any of our resorts to only once in every five years?

So if I can get in once every five years they shouldn't be allowed to trade out more than once every five years. Madge why can't RCI insist that resorts who impose these rules have it work both ways?

Larry,

It's the resorts who decide whether they wish to impose a restriction on the frequency of visits. RCI would not be in a position to force the hands of resorts that don't wish to implement this restriction.
