Flying into Miami -- driving to Key West
I've read a few of the other posts about driving down to Key West but I'm a little nervous. Would someone post me some "Driving Directions For Dummies" who are arriving into Miami airport this Saturday and driving down to Key West. We need to make this as painless as possible as we're travelling with a 2 1/2 year old and her grumpy mom (because her flight leaves at 0535!!!)
Thanks! Debi |

Go Here for the route to Florida City and the Keys. Once you get thru Florida City, it's straight to Key West.
As you will notice, DO NOT take U.S. 1 from the airport, but rather go directly West until you reach the Florida Turnpike. |

...and by the way....I think it is a VERY nice drive. Can be a little slow at times but it's an easy drive. We do it several times every year. Have a great time!

Great drive - we did it with the top down the last time (not practical with a youngster like you have)!

Once you get past Key Largo, it really speeds up. If your little one is still awake as you hit the keys, start looking for dorky little places to pull over and let her stretch her legs (like the "big lobster" on the left hand side, or any of the little pull-outs near bridges). Mostly, pray for her to fall asleep for a major chunk of the drive.

Depending on the day you arrive, you might hit weekend traffic to the Keys. It is still a pretty nice trip like others have said.
Stop in Marathon for lunch at Key's Fishery. http://www.keysfisheries.com It is right off US1 on a dock on the water. You order from a window and eat outdoors (covered) on picnic tables. Best seafood in the Keys -- maybe in Florida. Really. Plus, you can feed the tarpon from your table. Your little one should enjoy that. |

I looked at that map but I can't see the name of the road to go west on. Would you tell me the name please? Thanks. Debi

When you leave the airport, look for 836 west, take it to the turnpike and head south. Turnpike runs into US 1 at florida city and you stay on US 1 to Key west.
