Grande Ocean "Ocean Front"

I would avoid HHI until you get closer to at least March. Was recently there and the weather was awful (rain and cool). Given that this is an "outdoors" location good weather is very important.

Are only the rooms directly facing the ocean in the building Ocean Front, with the other rooms being " near ocean?"

The best way I have seen the Ocean Front view at Grande Ocean described is by drawing a horizontal line across the entire map directly below the Sea Horse and Sand Castle buildings. Everything above the horizontal line is Ocean Front. That puts all of the two buildings mentioned above as Ocean Front, and half of the Dolphin and Starfish buildings (the half nearest the ocean). Keep in mind, not all Ocean Front's at GO are directly facing the Ocean as they are at most beachfront resorts.

You can't see the ocean very well from some of them either. You can get a wonderful ocean view from some of the buildings in the center of the compound on high floors above the tree line.

I would never pay up for ocean front at GO given the crap shoot with the buildings and units. If you can buy a dedicated week unit that would change my tune.

Darn. I thought only the ocean fronts of the 4 buildings would be OF and the rest of those buildings being 'near ocean'. Are only several of those 4 buildings newly refurbished?

I believe the North side buidings went through the refurb in 2014. I don't believe the South side has seen the refurb yet.

Some of the units in the Star Fish building have been completed, but not all. There is quite a bit of work still occurring on the first three floors.

It all depends on what your priorities are. We would almost never consider Hilton head except in December to February. Not everyone wants to go in the water and highs in the 50's is just fine if you are coming from the snow belt. Much better than a humid 90 degrees in the summer for us. Also, things are very cheap and uncrowded this time of year. We are currently at Grande Ocean on an AC. The unit on the confirmation showed an Oceanside unit but we were upgraded to a wonderful ocean front unit in the front corner of the Dolphin building on the third floor. That would never happen in high season.

Very nice Boca. You must have a great view. Enjoy your stay at GO and the rest of your stay on HHI. I was at GO 2 years ago in Jan and I loved it! Had great weather. Looking forward to hearing your reviews of the many Marriott resorts you will be staying at on this trip.:)

We also loved Grande Ocean Christmas week a number of years ago. My sister remembers it as one of her favorites, and she has been on several trips with us over the years. We used a Mountainside studio for the exchange, and had, perhaps the same unit, third floor corner ocean front in Dolphin with a totally unobstructed view. Our son loved seeing the dolphins in the early morning without getting out of his PJ's! We rode bikes on the beach, made one day trips to Savannah and Charleston and Beaufort, and loved the restaurants. We have been back a couple of times in Spring, and if I could talk my husband into flying that far in January, we'd have used our two mostly dead ACs for a couple of weeks at the Hilton Head Marriotts as well. I keep seeing weeks available, but he is traveled out at the moment! I have offered one to our kids...hoping someone can use a HHI week if still available.

We were lucky with weather, no rain, and not very cold, and some magical Christmas lights in a neighborhood nearby. However, if it had been terribly stormy the entire time, I can see why one might hesitate to book the most wintery months.

We've been there in December/January with temps ranging all the way from 70's to 20's with everything from bright sunshine to rain to snow to an ice storm just a few years ago that covered everything and shut down traffic for most of a day. We just make sure we pack hats/gloves/warm coats and go with the flow.

About what's bolded - the Christmas Lights display that used to be on Dove Street was held this year at the new Shelter Cove Towne Centre. I was glad to read in the Island Packet that it's back up: Dove Street Festival of Lights ...

Yes, the view is great and the villa is very light because it has windows on two sides of the living room. When we finish the trip I will post my personal rankings of Marriott's eight Hilton Head resorts. Based on our first week, however, I think Grande Ocean will be tough to beat.
