Well you can go to Meteor Crater- as per the movie Starman. It is the probably one of the largest impacts in the world. Some people like it some don't. You are also only about 70 miles from Sedona with the gorgeous red rocks and great landscapes. Also near the painted desert there are some indian reservations with shops of Indian goods and again some interesting landscapes-including volcanic landscapes. Depending on the time of year, Flagstaff is about 50 miles away- its cooler since it is higher up.

Be sure to eat at La Posada, the old Harvey House in the train station. Their corn/black bean soup is to die for. Very neat place, take time to do the self guided tour. The Hopi reservation is only about 75 miles away and well worth the visit if you have time. First Mesa is amazing.
