What to pack for 7 day Alaska Summer Cruise?
My mom is all excited about this trip in July and is asking me what to pack. Is there laundry service on Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Star? We are so used to staying at timeshares that can't imagine going a week without doing laundry.

Re: What to pack for 7 day Alaska Summer Cruise?
Even in July, it can be cool and should not be surprised at rain- I would suggest that she have layers, and a rain coat (that will double as a wind breaker) with a hood (they you don't have to hunt for a hat). Usually don't need boots- unless she is a hiker, and will plan to take tours into the woods- but warm socks and gloves will come in handy. If she brings a nice amount of sweaters, sweatshirts, and long pants, she can count on a nice warm week. In the ports, casual is the dress of the day and night.
If she does not bring enough warm clothes- there are lots of stores near the docks in all ports- anything she might need. Hope she has a wonderful time visiting out state.- Ruth |

Layers is best for Alaska. That and water proof gear as it can rain a lot. Don't forget the umbrella.
In looking at pics from our two July cruises, I found I wore a lot of jeans and sweatshirts. There were also times when I was in a T-shirt and had a jean jacket with me. My wife actually had her heavy coat with her and was wearing it when we were in Skagway. We had taken a trip that took us up in the mountains and it got pretty chilly up in the high thin air. On the ships deck at night while you're sailing it can get pretty nippy at night. As for laundry on NCL, I don't know. We've always sailed on Royal Caribbean. |

She needs to go prepared for all kinds of weather. We had one cool rainy day and the rest of them were warm and sunny and we laid by the pool in our bathing suits. Layers are the best and definitely a raincoat. I see no reason she should need to do laundry for only one week. I strongly suggest she take a pair of binoculars.

Mosquito repellant! is a must, along with sun tan lotion, lip balm. A fanny pack and/or a day pack for excursions. Light weight hiking boots for excursions if they like to explore....especially in the rain. Sneakers are fine on sunny days...if you have any. Sunglasses. Flashlight.

Yes, there is a laundry service similar to what you would find in a hotel. Put laundry in a bag and it will be picked up and later delivered back to your cabin. Not cheap. Once a week (Wednesday, I think) you can stuff everything that will fit in the bag and get laundry done for about $20. However, unlike many cruise ships, there are no self-service laundry facilities on the Star. |

Dave, where would you find out about self service laundry?
We sailed on NCL Dawn last year and there was a laundry on each side of each cabin deck. Bruce W |

Yes, the Dawn has self service laundry, but her sister ship, the Star, doesn't.
The info is in various places, but here's a spot that covers both ships on this issue. See posts #3 and #4. |

Good walking or tennis shoes, wool socks, comfortable ski or hiking pants, a turtle neck top (for under sweater or shirt), ski jacket with hood & a zip out vest, gloves, cap or ear muffs, exercise or sweat suit to walk around on board, a few lighter tops, some nicer evening clothes for dinner. Camera & binocs a must.
We went in August and it was nice but gets very cold. If you have the opportunity to take a helicopter tour take the "Pilot's Choice". They go amazing places and you feel like your on another planet! Have fun. Sooby ![]() |
