Verizon cell phone- Hilton Head Island

We have been at Hilton Head all week and have had terrible reception on our Verizon cell phones. Is this normal for Verizon in this area? I called and was told to update. I did, but the reception is still bad.

We have Cingular and had hard time getting connections at Barony Beach. Didn't try using cell phone at other locations.

Verizon reception depends on location within the island itself. Sea Pines is awful. Grande Ocean a little better, but not much, it is right next to Sea Pines. I got better reception on the beach than in the room there. Palmetto Dunes had perfect Verizon reception, and I seem to recall we did pretty well up in Port Royal as well.

We stay at GO and Barony last November no problems with Verizon. However, my spouse did update our phones once we arrived on the Island.

Re: Verizon cell phone- Hilton Head Island

When I got a new phone recently, all of a sudden my Verizon service no longer worked in Vermont. I found out that it was because I no longer had an analog band on my new phone...only digital. Up at our resort, there is no digital service for Verizon. So...it possibly may depend on the type of phone you have.

I know there are a lot of "dead spots" on the island. I have T-Mobile and my daughter has Sprint and most of the time it's no problem, but it does vary depending upon where you are. Sea Pines is definitely one of the more challenging reception plantations, but again, it depends on where you actually are.

We just got home yesterday - stayed at the Waterside by Spinnaker.

You're right about reception - although the phone worked just fine and we could hear okay - at most we only had like 2 little bars at any time.

Re: Verizon cell phone- Hilton Head Island

We stayed at Waterside last year. We had to keep the phone in a certain spot on the coffee table for it to work. We had to sit in a certain direction on the sofa, and could not move in order to not loose the signal.

We stayed in Port Royal which is probably why we had no problems. It could depend on your phone too some are more prone to drop calls or have connection problems. I have a new verizon work cell phone and it can't always connect in the same area my personal verizon cell phone can.

Re: Verizon cell phone- Hilton Head Island

Sharon's point about the all-digital vs. dual or tri-mode phones is a good one. We still use tri-mode phones and end up on analog a lot on HHI. Analog really eats the batteries fast, though.

Re: Verizon cell phone- Hilton Head Island

My brother has Verizon and had a very difficult time with reception in Hilton Head. Often he had to go outside to even make a call. I have Cingulair and did not have any problems.
