JFK or EWR to Manhattan?

Airfare is exactly the same to JFK (AA) or EWR (UA). From looking at the websites, it appears cab fares and travel times are about the same. Both airlines are offering double miles and we have about the same FF with each so that's not a factor.

It's a Thurs-Mon trip and AA arrives at 4:11pm and leaves at 6pm; UA arrives at 5:21pm and leaves at 6:20pm. Not much difference there either.

Any recommendations on which to choose? We've never been to NYC and I've only flown into EWR for a connecting flight and never to JFK so my knowledge of the area is basically zero

Thanks!

I would prefer JFK...I'm surprised the cab fares are the same as JFK is closer.

That's another thing I forgot to mention. When I use Mapquest and the address for Park Central Hotel, JFK is 31 min. 17.9 mi; EWR is 25 min. 16.3 mi.

Re: JFK or EWR to Manhattan?

I think Newark is closer to Manhattan. The train from the Newark airport to Penn Station, NYC ( 33 to 35 St ) takes about 25 minutes......if the electricity is turned on.

Times....if via motor vehicle, don't forget rush hour traffic during week

Trains:

But there is also a Super Shuttle I need to ask about...it might be a lot easier since you will have so much luggage to tote, (and the trains have rush hour, too...so they may be loaded with people. (no baggage handling until at NY Penn. Then you need them to get you a cab or van)

Denise has posted a good, inexpensive co from Newark direct to the place you are staying.

Re: JFK or EWR to Manhattan?

Now if you could fly into LGA, that would be the best of the three. The problem getting from EWR by cab is going thru the tunnel. It's always backed up. You look like you will be hitting rush hour traffic both ways.

Re: JFK or EWR to Manhattan?

You're going against traffic on your arrival. Inbound from either JFK or EWR at 4 PM is not a big deal.

However, the arterials around JFK are chronically jammed up no matter the time of day or direction. Distance to the hotel is not a factor in your calculation.

I would choose EWR i as my experience using both regularly is that you will get into Manhattan much faster from the New Jersey side on a weekday afternoon.

Yes, but it's more expensive -- and more importantly would have to be a connecting flight (vs non-stop to JFK or EWR) adding about 3 hrs travel time each way.

That's a shame it's a direct flight from Chicago Ohare and I highly recommend flying into there when its a non stop flight because you get a great view of Manhatten and the Statue of Liberty when you are landing. The taxi is about $28 plus tip from LGA to MC.

Re: JFK or EWR to Manhattan?

Don't rule out car services. Last Dec we used a car service, Carmel I think was its name. With the online coupon it was $5.00 more than a cab from LGA, and it was a spotless Lincoln TC.
