Lightbulb How To Get Cheap Airfares !

Sorry folks - I am asking, not telling!

I was wondering if anyone has got the lowdown on what I sometimes see advertised on the internet of being able to get really cheap airfares. Are there any secrets that anyone here can share?

Re: How To Get Cheap Airfares !

Yes. The trick is, if you have a time machine, go back about a year, before fuel prices went through the roof. For right now, there are no really cheap airfares, so we'll just have to wait.

Occasionally, you'll see a fare war, like last week's war between American and United, where you could get round trip tickets from San Francisco to Washington, DC for about $140, but that only lasted about 4 hours.

No secrets, just a lot of hard work and some investment in the proper tools.

For example, see my post here:

Having the proper tool (in this case paid access to the GDS) can be helpful in targeting specifics.

How can I learn more about these "proper tools" ? I googled GDS and didn't seem to come up with much. Is this how you catch those 4 hour deals?

Read the mileage run forum on FlyerTalk. Most of the really good deals show up there, from people who make what I do seem like pre-school

GDS means "global distribution system" Google that along with airline and enjoy many happy hours of reading the arcane system of procuring airline tickets.

For example, Sabre Holdings owns Sabre, which is a GDS, and also owns Travelocity...

It's taken me a good two years of learning to get to the point I'm at, but I'm old and slow.
