Purchasing airline miles

Anyone know of a way to purchase airline mileage without going thru airline itself?

Most airlines have a clause prohibiting frequent fliers from selling their miles. NWA does. They do, however, permit transfers of miles between accounts. We often do that with my husband's miles, moving them over to my account when we need a large block of miles for tickets (like the 150k required for 2 RT's to Hawaii) if I happen to not have quite enough. If you were to enter into a purchase agreement, I don't know how they (the airline) would know you had done so . . . sorta like RCI finding out someone has rented out a TS exchange

Sign up for their mileage credit card? A substantial bonus usually obtains. Another example would be using a third party vendor, like the Ameniti program for UA, where joining essentially buys you miles. Another would be mutual "gifting".

Plenty of strategies over on FlyerTalk....
